CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Cultural Affairs Commission was called to order at 7:00 p.m. in the La Quinta Civic Center Study Session Room. Chairperson Francis presided over the meeting. Pledge of Allegiance was led by Chairperson Francis. ROLL CALL: MEMBERS PRESENT: Commissioner Steve Berliner Commissioner Susan Francis Commissioner Kathryn Hull Commissioner Michelle Klein MEMBERS ABSENT: Commission Honey Atkins Commissioner Martin Langer Commissioner Toni Lawrence STAFF PRESENT: Tom Hartung, Interim Parks & Recreation Director Cristal Spidell, Secretary II It was moved by Commissioner Berliner/Klein to excuse Commissioner Langer. Unanimous. It was moved by Commissioner Hull/Klein to excuse Commissioner Atkins. Unanimous. It was moved by Commissioner Klein/Hull to excuse Commissioner Lawrence. Unanimous. II. PU BLIC COMMENT - None VII. CORRESPONDENCE AND WRITTEN MATERIALS - A. CAC Membership to NALAA - Received & filed. B. APP Minutes for March 6, 1995 - Received & filed. C. Lawn Chair Society Information - Received & filed. VIII. STAFF REPORTS A. Staff confirmed the attendance of Chairperson Francis and Commissioner Hull for the NALAA Conference in San Jose, California, June 8-13, 1995. Staff will make all necessary arrangements for Commissioner Hull. Chairperson Francis elected to make her own arrangements and will provide receipts for reimbursement after the Conference. 1 IX. COMMISSION BUSINESS A. Final Review of Letter to Organizations The Commission reviewed the letter which will be sent to various organizations in the Valley and made additional changes. Attached is a copy of the final letter which was approved by the Commission after making minor changes. B. Complete Arts Education List of Names & Addresses Chairperson Francis indicated that she would like to see the Arts Education list completed by the Commission. The Commission concurred. ,The pages were divided amongst the Commissioners to obtain additional information such as contact person, mailing & street address, and phone numbers. The lists are to be completed and returned to Cristal Spidell, Commission Secretary no later than May 12th. Each Commissioner was asked to place an astrict next to the organization they feel should be sent a letter right away, as well as add names of organizations not already on the list. This list will be reviewed at the next meeting. C. Discussion and Evaluation of Easter Event Commissioner Klein thought the event was very well done, and was pleased with the turnout. Ms. Klein suggested that the Easter Mural Drawing Contest could be better organized by having the drawing held first, and while the kids are doing the egg hunt their work could be judged. She also suggested having additional judges for the sidewalk art contest, as well as sectioning off different age groups. Commissioner Francis agreed that the event was well done, as are all Parks and Recreation events. Ms. Francis suggested next year to have the kids sign-up for the Drawing Contest ahead of time and to make sure names were placed on each drawing, and to have younger kids participate (3 years old and up). Ms. Francis also suggested making a facade for the kids to go through on the way to the egg hunt. Commissioner Berliner suggested hiding the eggs better to make it more challenging when the kids did the hunt. X. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS A. The Value of the Arts - Hull Commi$Sioner Hull reviewed her report with the Commission. The Commission members enjoyed reading the report and thanked Ms. Hull for her efforts. Chairperson Francis asked Commissioner Hull if she would be interested in doing a proposal for the CAC. Ms. Hull indicated she would like too, however it is a project that should be taken on when the Commission has completed a few of its current projects. XI. COMMISSIONER REPORTS AND INFORMATIONAL ITEMS A. Committee or Professional Affiliation Reports Art In Public Places - The APP is currently working on the art work for the Ralph's Center. Community Concerts Association - Donna Martin is the new President. Encore! - April 29th is the last concert of the season. A Champaign Reception will be held at Kathryn Hull's home. Currently working on next years season. 2 LQ Arts Foundation - It is currently budget season. The La Quinta Hotel Crafts Under the Umbrellas event was successful. LQ Chamber of Commerce - May 5th is the next Mainstreet Market. The theme is Cinco De Meyo. Installation dinner is on May 20th, call the Chamber of tickets. LQ Little Theater - June 2nd is the next performance. The two plays being produced are The Little Princess and 12 Dancing Princesses. B. Subcommittee Reports La Quinta Pageant - Commissioner Francis The steering committee will meet on April 25. The Committee members are Honey Atkins (Chairperson), Susan Francis, Fred Rice, Judy Vossler, Glenda Bangerter, Darlene Romano, and Scott Delacio. Arts Advocacy - Commissioner Hull Collecting materials and information on Arts Advocacy. Will continue to work on plan for the Commission to sponsor an Arts Education Forum to share information with kids, parents, etc. sometime next year. Latin Jazz/Salsa Day - Commissioner Berliner Has been making contact with individuals to discuss the study. Will meet with Roger Larranaga (KUNA Radio), Manny Sanchez, Michelle Dallas, and Judy Vossler in June. Fall '96 or Spring '97 possible event date. Steve Rogers, City of Indio, has invited Mr. Berliner to the next planning meeting for the Tamale Festival. DEPA - Commissioner Berliner Mr. Berliner read a memo which was sent to Jon Gaffney and Sherry Wollenberg regarding the program. Janice Lyle, Executive Director of the Desert Museum indicated that they have hired Dick Horner and Lynn Stewart as Theater Arts Directors. They have expressed an interest in helping with the program. XII. NEXT MEETING DATE, TIME AND TOPIC Monday, May 22,1995 7:00 P.M. XIII. ADJOURNMENT It was moved by Commissioner Berliner/Klein to adjourn the Cultural Affairs Commission meeting to the next regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, May 22, 1995.
