CACMIN 10 30 1997 CULTURAL COMMISSION SPECIAL MEETING MINUTES October 30, 1997 I. CAll TO ORDER A special meeting of the Cultural Commission was called to order at 6:03 p.m. in the Council Chambers at the La Quinta Civic Center. Chairperson Hull led the Pledge of Allegiance, and presided over the meeting. MEMBERS PRESENT: Commissioner Honey Atkins Commissioner Susan Benay Commissioner John Detlie Commissioner Kathryn B. Hull (Chairperson) Commissioner Roxanne Voigt Commissioner Judy Vossler (Vice Chairperson) Commissioner Patrick Welch STAFF PRESENT: Mark Weiss, Assistant City Manager Britt Wilson, Management Assistant Cristal Spidell, Secretary II. PUBLIC COMMENT - None III. CONFIRMATION OF AGENDA IV. CONSENT CALENDAR - None V. PUBLIC HEARING VI. BUSINESS ITEMS A. Consideration of Community Services Grant Applications Staff reported that seventeen (17) organizations have applied for Community Services Grant Funding for a total of $74,450. Staff informed the Commission that the original $25,000 which was available has been reduced to $24,347 due to the City Council allocating $653 towards the Chamber of Commerce 10K Run. A final decision has not been reached as to whether the entire allocation will be utilized for grant purposes. The City Council has asked the Commission to review the 17 grant applications and forward a recommendation to them for consideration at a later date. Each applicant introduced their organization, and then answered questions from the Commissioners. The following organizations were represented: · Miss La Quinta Pageant · Friends of the La Quinta Library · Community Gardens of the Coachella Valley · La Quinta Monarchs Baseball Club · Martha's Kitchen I OLPH Church · FISH · Family Service of Coachella Valley C:\MyData\CRISTAL\CAC\MINlO-30.wpd 1 · ramily YMCA of the Desert / La Quinta I-'reschool · La Quinta Arts Association · PGA West Volunteer Fire Company · Volunteers for Increased Public Safety · La Quinta-Indio SHARE of the Desert · San Gorgonio Girl Scout Council · Humane Society of the Desert / Orphan Pet Oasis · Media Arts Foundation Organizations applying for funds but did not have a representative present: · Shelter From the Storm, Inc. · California Desert Chorale After hearing from all the applicants the Commission discussed funding for each organization in the following amounts: Miss La Quinta Pageant - $500 Friends of the La Quinta Library - $2500 California Desert Chorale - $600 Community Gardens of the Coachella Valley - $2500 La Quinta Monarchs Baseball Club - $1000 Martha's Kitchen / OLPH Church - $2000 FISH - $1400 Family Service of Coachella Valley - $2000 Family YMCA of the Desert / La Quinta Preschool - $2000 La Quinta Arts Association - $1850 PGA West Volunteer Fire Company - $2500 Volunteers for Increased Public Safety - $1000 La Quinta-Indio SHARE of the Desert - $1400 San Gorgonio Girl Scout Council- $1000 Humane Society of the Desert / Orphan Pet Oasis - $1000 Media Arts Foundation - $0 Shelter From the Storm, Inc. - $1000 It was moved by Commissioner VosslerNoigt to recommend funding in the amounts indicated to the City Council. Unanimous. VII. CORRESPONDENCE AND WRITTEN MATERIALS - None VIII. COMMISSIONER ITEMS - None IX. ADJOURNMENT It was moved by Commissioner Welch/Atkins to adjourn the Cultural Commission meeting.
