Identifier: CRM TECH 1885-86 Date Constructed: 1958
UTM Zone: 11S, 563739 mE / 3724093 mN
Neighborhood: The Cove
Tract: Santa Carmelita Unit No 19; Recorded December 31, 1937, MB 19/34
Owner and Address: Judith Sheperd; PO Box 1514, La Quinta CA 92247
Updated Description: The subject property was designed in 1956 and constructed by 1958 in the La Quinta Cove neighborhood
by Walter S. White. CRM Tech described the property as a Modern style single-family residence in 2006. Urbana staff conclude that
residence more specifically displays the characteristics of a Contemporary style residential property. The residence has a cross gable
roof with prominent overhangs at the gable ends. The gables feature thick exterior support beams and fixed windows at the roofline.
The exterior is clad in stucco. The front entrance is covered by the roof overhang. A stucco clad wall surrounds a portion of the
residence. Based on what is visible, there does not appear to have been any significant additions to the residence. The cross gable
roof with heavy beams and open, upturned eaves is extant. The windows at the gable peak are also extant. This residence was
designed and constructed at the same time as the adjoining properties, 77438 Calle Chillon and 53960 Avenida Alvarado, by Walter
S. White. Since the prior survey, the home appears to have been remodeled, repainted, and enclosed by a privacy wall.
Updated Significance: A prior survey evaluated the property as status code 6Z - found ineligible for NRHP, CRHR, and Local
Register designation. The current survey found that the dwelling is associated with the theme of Residential Development (1934-
1970s), but it does not possess individual documented significance in relation to this theme. While the dwelling is located within the
proposed La Quinta Cove Historic District, it is a non-contributor due to its architectural style and date of construction.
The dwelling has not been found individually eligible under NRHP/CRHR/Local Criterion A/1/B, as it has not been associated with
significant events or patterns of events in local, regional, state, or national history; not individually eligible under Criterion B/2/B, as it
has not been identified as having an association with an important person; not individually eligible under Criterion C/3/C, as it does
not embody the distinctive characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction, and is not a representative example of a
residential property designed by Walter S. White; and not individually eligible under Criterion D/4/D, as further study of the dwelling
would not appear to yield information which could be considered important in local, regional, state, or national history. Additionally,
the property was not found to be individually eligible under Local Register Criterion A, as it was not found to exemplify a special
element of the City of La Quinta. While no additions have altered the form of the building, the dwelling has been extensively
remodeled and no longer maintains integrity from the historic period.
