':STAKI /,ANCHOR TESTING (Coa<<aued from page 9) Observation tells us that most stakes may move some in tbe;ground befam they reach their maximum holding power. This oceurance can be attributed to a number cT reasons. First, in soft ground the optimums angle for driving a stakc may be different than that actually used, and a ,stake moves until it takes a set. Some stakes will move while others will not, until the load ewes out ona n umbar of stakes on a given side of a tent. Practice should be established to install the stakes cir anchors so ss to minimize the movement. Any movertuat which disrupts the soil contributes to stake failure. In the test results from the Midwinter Tent Rental Meeting in Anaheim, (wbieh would be considered a minimum test sampling) there are sonic quick assumptions bat can be drawn: 1. Most 1" diameter steel stakes will develop about 1,000 lbs. of melding power. 2. Larger diameter stakes of rehar give another 20%. 1 of holding power. 3. T\vo stakes used in tandem, 6r crossed, will incre>a"se the holding power by about 50%. 4_ Three stakes used in a `T' bar or claw will yield about three limes as much holdin power as a single stake. 5. Specialty anchors, such as the light size screw anchor, also will provide the higher loading power. If a conclusion is in order, it might be summed up like this. T6 provide a lomt installation for the lawn site at Anaheim, with the existing conditions of open site, wet loose soli, and possible high winds you would have: A 40' wide tent single steel stakes on every -rope, plugs double stats on corners and the center line would make the bare minimums. For a ti0' wido tent, it would require double staking 6n every ropy, and mast side poles would have two ropes. In addition, some would require a t"' bar or sa-ew anchor. With 20 plus years experience in the tent rental industry, dus assumption. seems to be a good one. Performance resulis can be gained from testing of actual Initallradons; but the charting of the results in a manner to allow fast review for future use is important. Tth;n, periadically pull out the charts and evaluate your results. The final test of course is...,.did the. thnt stand up reader. the storm conditions? Stake size Test Uad, lbs. g Frst lost A.
