BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW: On May 15, 2001, the City Council approved modifications to the De Martino Art Piece located on the northeast corner of Washington Street and Highway 11 1. The Cultural Arts Commission had recommended that the lucite "gem" be made of an aquamarine color. Mr. De Martino began work on the piece in June 2001. One of the requirements for the lucite "gem" was to have it fade resistant for at least five years. Mr. De Martino has experimented with several different pigments for the "gem" and has experienced difficulty in finding a formula that will not fade in the sunlight. Mr. De Martino attended the December 20 Cultural Arts Commission meeting and presented several different color swatches for consideration by the Commission. Mr. De Martino reported that green pigment does not withstand the effects of sunlight and suggested that more blue be added to the pigment to produce longer lasting results. Attachment A are color samples for the Commission's consideration for the gem section of the art piece. Mr. De Martino is anticipated to be in attendance to answer any questions the Commission may have regarding the color samples. ALTERNATIVES: The alternatives available to the Commission are: 1. Select a color sample for recommendation to the City Council for SACommunity Services\CAComm\CACRPT.287.De Martino Piece.wpd ► 9 consideration; or 2. The Commission may wish to begin to finalize the plans and present a written agenda of entertainment for confirmation by the 20th Anniversary Celebration Committee. ALTERNATIVES: The alternatives available to the Commission are: 1. Begin the finalization of the entertainment for the 20th Anniversary Celebration; or 2. Do not begin the finalization of the entertainment for the 20th Anniversary Celebration; or 3. Provide staff with alternative direction. I like that ending better. The introductions would be made by a teacher of the La Quinta High School. The school does have a sound system which covers one side (about 1500 people) To cover both sides, they would have to rent and use an outside company. The expense would be about $2000.00; Mat Buggs fLw!i'th ls he can get the approval for the expenditure, so there would be no cost to us. o,refreshments will be served that night; there will be a Snack Bar open the entire time, starting at 6:30 the prelude music. The reason for suggesting the firew rks at the end of the entertainment to keep everyone there, plus the lighting would be a problem. After it is turned off, it takes about 10 minutes before it is totally on again. After the fireworks, the emergency fl000ights are turned on until the big lights come back on. The High School will print programs which will be distributed everywhere, which - again - will benefit the City of La Quinta. They will also contact the media and have announcements made and do as much advertising as possible. r-ontacted and met with the owners, director and producers of a film company. and they have agreed to cover the entire event. The school and the City Council will receive a copy of the film which can be used for future events. Tuesday, November 13, 2001 America Online: 8"Loudon Pape. 1 Vi ATTACHMENT A r ;! !"y' v . /
