CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
MINUTES
June 13, 2002
I. CAll TO ORDER
A regular meeting of the Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 7:00 p.m. in the Study
Session Room of the La Quinta Civic Center. Chairperson Shamis presided over the meeting.
Commissioner Baxley led the Pledge of Allegiance.

It was moved by Commissioner Reynolds/Loudon to approve the Consent Calendar.
Unanimous.

VI. BUSINESS ITEMS
A. Cultural Arts Commission Work Plan
Staff gave an overview of the City Council's direction regarding the Cultural Arts
Commission's work plan: The City Council asked that the Commission refine the
details of the "Coachella Valley Conferences, Workshops and Cultural Events".
Commissioner Sham is asked if the events should be split into individual tasks. Staff
stated that the tasks could be more refined in scope and left as part of the same

Commissioner Shamis read the minutes of the May 21 City Council meeting, and
stated that she did not want any task to be lost in the shuffle. The Meet the La Quinta
Artist program should continue. However, specific art lessons could be provided by
the La Quinta Arts Association membership.
It was moved by Commissioner Reynolds/Loudon to approve the changes to the
Cultural Arts Commission work plan and resubmit the document for City Council
approval. Unanimous.
VII. CORRESPONDENCE AND WRITTEN MATERIALS
None.
VIII. COMMISSIONER ITEMS
A. Commissioner Reynolds shared information regarding a tour being arranged by M & M
Tours to Big Bear for lunch and a theater production.
B. Commissioner Loudon reported that the Coachella Valley Arts Alliance is planning an
arts event at the River project in Rancho Mirage. She also stated that the December
fund-raising event is being planned for the Lodge at the Ritz Carlton in Rancho Mirage.
The media breakfast that was held was successful, even though only 6 people
attended.
C. Chairperson Shamis stated that she hoped the Commission would follow through on
offering musical events in the future. She also offered support in having the musical
entertainment from the schools being incorporated with the Community Picnic.
D. Chairperson Sham is also suggested that the Commission should begin planning the
holiday season entertainment and invite the artists now. She also suggested that the
locations for the temporary art program.
E. Commissioner Reynolds asked that the Temporary Art Contract be presented for City
Council consideration.
F. The Commission asked for an update on the De Martino piece on the northeast corner
of Washington Street and Hwy. 111. Staff will invite Mr. De Martino to the next
Commission meeting.
G. Chairperson Sham is asked for a report on the article regarding the art pieces at the
sculpture garden. Staff reported that the City Council will consider accepting the
donation of the art pieces at the June 18, 2002 City Council meeting.
H. The Commission asked for an update on the La Quinta Court project. Staff reported
that it is nearing completion, however, the landscaping and lighting needed to be
completed.

I. Commissioner Baxley asked for an update on the mural at the Senior Center. Staff
reported that the mural was complete, and the unveiling was done during the Arts and
Crafts show portion of the 20th Anniversary Celebration on April 27, 2002.
J. Commissioner Reynolds reported that she and Commissioner Diamond worked on the
art files and had one more day of work to do.
K. Commissioner Reynolds asked for an update on the Bruce Thomas piece of art work
that was located at the Painted Cove development. Staff reported that the piece is in
storage, and will work with the artist on the specifics of placing the piece in a new
location. This will be brought back for Commission consideration.
L. The Commission thanked Chairperson Sham is for her dedication to the Commission
and wished her well in her future endeavors.
IX. ADJOURNMENT
It was moved by Commissioners Reynolds/Loudon to adjourn the Cultural Arts
Commission meeting. Unanimous. Meeting adjourned at 7:40 p.m.
