OvBR 10/03/90 07 : E 1.21 37218462 P. OE Load Testing of the Three Slabs The Toad testing of the three concrete slabs was conducted on May 24, 1988, when the eiabs were 30 days old and had been drying from the top surface for 27 days. All dial gages were zeroed and force was applied in Inorements 011,000 Iba. (453.8 kg). Atter each Increment, the force was held constant and the dial gages were read. Output from the strain indicator was checked periodically by comparing with anticipated end actual pressure gage readings. Force application continued until each Blab failed. Testing of Teat Specimens Three 6 by 12 In. (15 cm by 30 cm) cylinders and two 8x8x30 In. (15x15x76 cm) prisms, for each Set of epeolmene, were strip- ped the day after casting and transferred to a curing tank. The cyllndere were tested for compreaalve strength (ASTM 039) and the beams were tested for flexural strength (AVM C78) at ages of 28 days, Cioaeup view of load teat setup. The remaining six cylinders and two prisms were cured under wet burlap and polyethylene for three days. Al the time the slabs were uncovered, the burlap and polyethylene sheeting were removed, the bottom of the plastic cylinder molds were cut off, and the cylinders were laid on their side. The prisms remained uncovered In the molds until they were 30 days old (I.e. until the day of testing of the slabs). By cutting off the bottom of the cyllndere and uncovering the prisms, the curing condition of the slabs was simulated, I.e., maximum distance from any point to a free (dry) surface Is 8 In. (15 om). The compressive strength of the cylinders and the flexural strength of the prisma cured wet for 3 days and dried for 27 days was determined et the time the slabs were Toad meted. FIBERMESH FIBER FIBERMESH COMPANY 4019 INDUSTRY DRIVE CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE 37416 1. SUBJECT Fibermesh fiber II, DESCRIPTION Fibermesh is a collated fibrillated polypropylene olefin fiber furnished in small bundles that unravel when added to a concrete mix. Shrinkage resistance of normal -weight and lightweight concrete are enhanced when a concentration of 1.5 pounds of fibers etre mixed with one cubic yard of concrete. Cracking due to drying shrinkage and thermal expansion is caused by tensile stresses which are created by differential strains that occur under uniform drying, temperature rise, or uneven restraint. Thus, shrinkage and thermal cracking resemble flexural cracking and are controlled by the suitable location of welded wire. fabric or the addition of Fibermesh Fiber to the concrete mix. 111. The atdee of the forms were made of plywood and were anchored to the floor slab. The Joints were sealed with silicone caulk and the Inside surfaces of the plywood were coated with form•oll. One layer of 6x9• W1.4 x W1.4 welded wire fabrlo (WWF) was placed .on 4 In. (101 mm) Mph chairs In one form so that the mesh was 2 In. (61 rnm) below the fintshed slab surface. Lifting anchors, made Of bent pleoes of No. 4 rebar, were embedded In each corner of ell three slabs, Casting Sequence and. Procedure: The three elebe were cast according to the following sequence. 1, The Blab containing WWF. 2. The plain concrete slab. 3. The slab containing Flbermesh flbers. After the "WWF" and the "Plain" Blabs were Oast, Flbermesh was added to the remaining conorete In the ready -mix truck Rt a quantity of 1,5 lbs. of fibers per cubic yard (0,9 kg/cubic meter) of concrete. The concrete with the polypropylene flbers was mix- ed for b minutes In the reedymlx truck and the "Fiber" slab was oast. ••. Ali concrete was consolidated using Internal vibration, The conorete was subsequently struck with a wood board and given a magnesium float flnlsh. After Initial set, the three slabs were covered with wet burlap and polyethylene sheeting. Coating Test Slabs P. 0? Fabrication of Test Spaclmene: Two sets of test specimens, each consisting of six 8x12 In. (15x30 cm) oyllnders and three ex6x30 In. (15x15x76 cm) prisms, were fabricated during casting of the slabs. The first set of cytlndera and prisms was made of concrete from the ready -mix truck before fibers were added and represents the concrete In the WWF and Plain slabs. The second set of cylinders and prisms was made after the fibers had been added to the remaining con- crete and represents the concrete In the Flbermesh slab. After Initial set, the specimens were covered with wet burlap and polyethylene sheeting. STATIC LOAD TESTING OF THE THREE SLABS Teat Setup. The slabs were elevated, using the embedded anchors, and supported on 4x4 In, (10x10 cm) wood beams along alt four edges. Dthied•In expansion anchors were set on opposite sides of the slab to support a reaction beam. An 1 -beam supported by conorete blocks Independent of the Blab was placed perpendicular to the reaction beam. Twelve dial gage on magnetic stands were mounted along the I-beam to monitor deflections. The two gages closest to the center of the slab had a 3 In. (70 mm) stroke. The other dial gages had a 1 In. (25 mm) stroke. The gage points rested on 1 in. (25 mm) squares of glass plate epoxied to the top surface of the concrete Blab. The outer- most two dial gages were mounted over the centerline of the 4x4's (10x10 cm) to monitor deflections at the support. Two 12x12x1 In, (30x30x2.6 cm) e1ee1 plates, placed on a piece of peg board over a piece of carpet of the same size es the plates, served as the force -transmitting system. Force was applied using a hydraullo ram and o Calibrated load cell placed between the reaction beam and the steel plate. Applied forces were monitored using the load cell and a strain indicator. Ram pressure could be read on a hydraulic pressure gauge (manometer). Reeulte apply only to Ffberrneeh, PURPOSE OF THE TEST This test program compered on a large ecale the flexural capacity and deflections of concrete slabs containing the recommended use of Flbermeeh polypropylene fibers to a plain concrete slab and a concrete slab containing a typical amount of welded wire fabric (WWF) for drying shrinkage crack control purposes. All three slabs were cast from one batch of concrete. WIMM h.y .1i .....'\ed •a Photo courtesy Wise, Janney, Elstner & Associates, Inc.
