Load Testing of the Three Slabs
The load testing of the three concrete slabs was conducted on
May 24, 1986, when the slabs were 30 days old and had been
drying front the top surface for 27 days,
All dial gages were zeroed and force was applied in increments
011,000 Ibe, (453,6 kg). After each Increment, the force was held
constant and the dial gages were road. Output from the strain
indicator was checked periodically by oomparing with anticipated
end actual pressure gage readings. Force application oontlnued
until each slab failed.
Testing of Teat Specimens
Three 6 by 12 in, (15 cm by 30 cm) cylinders and two 8x8x30
In. (16x15x76 cm) prisms, for each set of specimens, were strip-
ped the day after Casting and transferred to a curing lank. The
cylinders were tested for compressive strength (ASTM 039) and
the beams were tested for flexural strength (ASTM C78) at ages
of 28 days,
Closeup view 01
lead test setup.
The remaining six cylinders and two prisms were cured under
wet burlap and polyethylene for three days, At the time the slabs
were uncovered, the burlap and polyethylene sheeting were
removed, the bottom of the plastic cylinder molds were cut off,
and the cylinders were laid on their side. The prisms remained
uncovered In the molds until they were 30 days old (I.e. until the
day of testing of the slabs).
By cutting off the bottom of the cylinders and uncovering the
prime, the curing COndltlon of the Slabs was simulated, 1.e„
maximum distance from any point to a free (dry) surface is 8 In.
(15 om).
The compressive strength of the cylinders and the flexural
strength of the prisms cured wet for 3 days and dried for 27 days
was determined at the time the slabs were load tested.

1, The measured compressive and flexural strengths were
unaffected by the two curing methods.
2. The average compressive strength of the Flbermesh co.n
trete of 8370 psi (44.59 N/mm') wee an 80/0 Increase over
the plain concrete,
3, The respective flexural strengths of the plain and the
Flbermesh concrete were 740 (6.18 N/mm2) and 760 pet
(5,32 N/mm9),
Load Testing of Three Slabs
1. The respeotive }allure loads for the Plain, WWF and
Flbermesh stabs were 18,000 !be, (7268 kg), 17,000 lbs.
(7711 kg) and 17,360 lbs. (7870 kg).
2. The WWF slab faked at a etatic load of 17,000 Ibs.
(7711 k9) without allowing reading of the dist gages. in con-
trast, the dial gages could be read at the same Toad for the
Flbermesh Slab.
3. The relationship between applied load (force) and measured
deflections was approximately linear for the slabs up to about
14,000 lbs. (8380 kg) force.

1. SUBJECT
Fibermesh Fiber
II. DESCRIPTION
Fibermesh is o collated fibrillated polypropylene olefin fiber
furnished in smrali bundles that unravel when added to a
concrete mix. Shrinkage resistance of normai.weicght and
lightweight concrete arra enhanced when a concentration of
1.5 pounds of fibers are mixed with one cubic yard of
concrete.
Criackinf} due to drying shrinkage and thermal expansion
is caused by tensile stresses which are created by differential
strains that occur under uniform drying, temperature rise,
ur uneven restraint. Thus, shrinkage and thermal cracking
resemble flexural cracking and are controlled by the suitable
location of welded wire fabric or the addition of Fibermesh
Fiber to the concrete mix.

CASTING OF CONCRETE SLABS
Forme: The eIabe were cast on polyethylene on top of the

were made of plywood and were anchored to the floor slab. The

of the plywood were coated with form•oll,One layer of 60-

(51 mm) below the finiehed stab surfeoe. Lifting Anchors, made
Of bent pieces of No. 4 rebel., were embedded In each corner
of all three slabs,
CeetIng Sequence end Procedure:
The three slabs were cast according to the following sequence.
1 The slab containing WWF.
2. The plain concrete slat+.
3. The slab containing Flbermesh fibers.
After the "WWF" and the "Plain" slabs were oast, Flbermesh
was added to the remaining concrete In the ready -mix truck et

Fabrication of Test Specimens:
Two Bets of test apeclmene, each consisting of six 602 In.
(15x30 cm) oylinders and three exex30In. (15x15x76 cm) prisms,
were fabricated during casting of the slabs, The first set of
cyiinders and prisms was made of concrete from the ready•mix
truck before fibers were added and represents the concrete In
the WWF and Plain slabs. The second set of cylinders and prisms
was made after the fibers had been added to the remaining con-
crete and represents the concrete In the Fibarmeeh slab. After
Initial est, the specimens were covered with wet burlap and
polyethylene sheeting.
STATIC LOAD TESTING OF
THE THREE SLABS
Teat Setup. The slabs were elevated, using the embedded
anchors, and supported on 4x4 in. (10x10 cm) wood beams along
all four edges. Dri+ied•in expansion anchors were set on opposite
sides of the slab to support a reaction beam.
An I-beam supported by concrete blocks Independent of the slab
was pieced perpendicular to the reaction beam. Twelve dial gage
on magnetic stands were mounted along the 1 -beam to monitor
deflections. The two gages closest to the center of the stab had
a 3 in. (70 mm) stroke. The other dial gages had a 1 In. (25 mm)
stroke, The gage points rented on 1 In. (25 mm) squares of glass
pieta epoxied to the top surface of the concrete slab. The outer•
most two dial gages were mounted over the centerline of the
4x4'e (10x10 cm) to monitor deflections at the support.
Two 12x12x1 In, (30x30x2.6 cm) steel plates, placed on a piece
of peg board over a piece of carpet of the same size as the plates,
served as the force -transmitting system. Force was applied
using a hydrauilo ram and a Calibrated toad cell placed between
the reaction beam and the steel plate. Applied forces were
monitored using the load cell and a strain indicator. Pam pressure
could be read on a hydraulic preesure gauge (manometer).

PURPOSE OF THE TEST
This test program compared on a large scale the flexural capacity and
deflections of concrete slabs containing the recommended use of
Flbermesh polypropylene fibers to a plain concrete slab and a concrete
slab containing a typical amount of welded wire fabric (WWF) for
drying shrinkage crack control purposes. Ali three slabs were cast
