HUMAN RELATIONS COMMITTEE
MINUTES OF MEETING
April 24, 1984
The regualr quarterly meeting was called to order by President John
Pena at 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers in the City Hall.
All joined in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of our country.
Present were John Pena, David Jones, Betty Mazza, Marilyn Knecht,
and Beverl~ Montgomery.
The minutes of the January 31, 1984 meeting were presented and
approved as written.
Gretchen Gochel - Coachella Valley Parks and Recreation represent-
ative was introduced and gave a very complete report on the La Quinta
Park:
Many organizations using community building.
Youth and Sports organized for baseball season.
Linda Sheehan introduced teen program~ - dances once a month for 12 yrs.
to 16 yrs. old group - Tues. and Thurs. afternoons for games and
discussions.
Juan Flores - carate classes (awaiting insurance approval)
Boxing classes under survey
A playground director is needed for summer activities and planning.
Requested chess club should have 20 members - will advertise for the
fall to start as only 8 people responded previously.
Tumbling program (on mats only) to be explored.
Park upgrading on the East. end:
Continue lighting to the basketball dourts etc.
Irrigation design in the planning. .
Replacement of teter-toters. etc. - dOnation of money from La Quinta
Women's Golf Association of the La Quinta Country Club.
Possibility of eveing movies during the summer.
Toilets (outside) being upgraded and security lighting.
Joe Lafaro - Sports Director for Coachella Valley Parks and Recreation
always available for conference.
Park remains lighted in the evenings when not in use for security
reasons. The light bill is considerably less than the vandalism.
The bicycle race originally planned for April 14th. was not held.
September 22nd. or 29th. will be the new date. John pena will have
tentative plans from his associates for the next meeting. He will
also check Indio's community calendar for availability of dates.
This committee is responsible for the decorations for La Quinta's
Celebration to be held April 28th. in the La Quinta Park and Community
Building. Table cloths, flowers down the center of the tables and
buffets - balloons and streamers hanging from the ceiling light fixtures
and walls, etc.

It was agreed to send a personal letter to Michael Degasperin of
Indian Springs area, La Quinta, to join us at the next meeting with
input from his area. Also, invite him to bring other'interested
residents from that area.
Instruct the city staff to find a place in the Indian Springs area
for a bulletin board for official notices and construct same. Also,
notify all residents upon completion of bulletin board its location.
This recommendation is for better communication between the two areas
of La Quinta.
Request from City Staff for the results of the city survey on senior
citizens, etc. conducted by Mayor Bob Baier in 1983. This is needed
to consider senior citizen .functions in the future.
