COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION
MINUTES
MAY 28, 1991
Regular meeting of the Community services Commission was called to
order at the hour of 7:00 P.M. by Chairman Molina.
PRESENT: Commissioners Benedict, Franke, Merritt and Chairman
Molina
ABSENT: Commissioner Kennedy, 2 Vacancies
MOTION - It was moved by Commissioners Franke/Merritt to excuse
Commissioner Kennedy. Motion carried unanimously.
WRITTEN COMMUNICATION - None
PUBLIC COMMENT - None
OLD BUSINESS
1. PARKS AND RECREATION
a. Presentation of Awards to Winners of Environmental
Poster, Art Project and Essay Contests.
Commissioner Molina introduced Council Member Sniff and
Truman School Principal Maureen Mendoza.
Council Member Sniff expressed his pleasure in
participating in the "Earth Month" activities sponsored
by the La Quinta Community Services Commission with the
continuing cooperation from La Quinta Adams/Truman and
Middle School and, of course with the Desert Sands School
District itself!
He felt that in this time of growing concern for the
unique and fragile environment, it is particularly
important to involve our young people in this effort to
understand, protect, and to enhance our "our environment"
and "our quality of life".
Council Member Sniff & Maureen Mendoza presented the
awards and congratulated the recipients.

Jenkins, a teacher at La Quinta Middle School who assisted in
handing out the awards to the La Quinta Middle School
Students.

a. Consideration of Activities to Promote Red Ribbon Week.

Commissioners discussed activities for Red Ribbon Weeks
and the fOllowing motion was made:
MOTION - It was moved by Commissioners Franke/Merritt to
purchase 400 buttons @ $100 and 25 posters @ $10 from
Californians for Drug Free Youth. Motion carried
unanimously.
b. Selection of La Quinta Beautiful Award for the Month of
May.
MOST BEAUTIFUL - 54-985 Tecate
MOST IMPROVED - 77-175 Durango
c. Discussion of Community Services Grant Criteria.
Motion - It was moved by Commissioners Merritt/Franke to
table the grant criteria until a complete community
Services Commission is seated, a community Services Grant
Committee is selected and the Community Service
commission can meet with City Council at a joint session.
Motion carried unanimously.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF APRIL 29, 1991 AND MAY 16, 1991.
Motion - It was moved by Commissioners Franke/Molina to accept the
minutes as presented. Motion carried unanimously.
NEW BUSINESS
Commissioner Merritt advised that she will not be able to attend
the meeting of June 24, 1991.
ADJOURNMEN'l'
Motion - It was moved by Commissioners Merritt/Benedict to adjourn
the meeting. Motion carried unanimously.
