COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION MINUTES
October 12. 1998
CALL TO ORDER
~ regular meeting of the Community Services Commission was called to order at 7:00 p.m. in the
.a Quinta Civic Center Study Session Room. Chairperson St. Johns presided over the meeting.
:ommissioner Wolff led the Pledge of Allegiance.

A. Approval of Minutes for September 14, 1998
It was moved by Commissioner Rebich/Wolff to approve the Minutes of September 14, 199f
as submitted. Unanimous.
B. Monthly Department Report
Ms. Horvitz introduced Marni Kunsman, Recreation Supervisor. Ms. Kunsman reviewed thl
list of upcoming events including new classes, a Barn Dance, Soccer and Volleyball leagues
Tiny Tot Halloween Carnival, Tree Lighting Ceremony, and Breakfast with Santa. The neX'
brochure will be out early January 1999. New instructors and class ideas are being workec
on.
It was moved by Commissioner Pedersen Nadler/Davis to accept the Department Report a~
submitted. Unanimous.
Commissioner Lopez apologized to the Commission for his absence last month.

VI. BUSINESS ITEMS
A. Work Plan
Staff informed the Commission that some minor changes were made to the Work Plan after
it was reviewed by Commissioner Wolff, as directed by the Commission. The Work Plan was
then submitted to the City Council for consideration on October 6, 1998. The Council
reviewed the Work Plan, and sent it back to staff to make the recommended changes. Ms.
Horvitz noted that the City Council is looking for a Work Plan that has clarity, and that has
tasks that can be accomplished.
Staff reviewed each page of the Work Plan and discussed the changes the City Council had
made. The Council asked staff to indicated the amount of staff time versus Commissioner
time on each of the tasks.
It was moved by Commissioner Betancourt/Wolff to approve the Work Plan with changes, and
forward the Work Plan to the City Council for consideration and approval. Unanimous.
rn. CORRESPONDENCE AND WRITTEN MATERIALS
A. Park Master Plan - Property behind La Quinta Middle School
Staff reported that the property behind La Quinta Middle School has construction debris, and
is in the process of adding more portables. Commissioner Pedersen/Nadler distributed a map
of the area and the Commission discussed the use of the property. Staff indicated that a
meeting will be held on Tuesday with City staff and maintenance personnel from the school
to discuss clean up and future use of the area.
fill. COMMISSIONER ITEMS
Commissioner Pedersen Nadler told staff that the electrical covers on the poles at the Sports
Complex are open and wires are exposed. Staff will check the poles and repair as needed.
Chairperson St. Johns distributed CalWorks and Student Assessment Program information to the
Commissioners (copy on file).
Commissioner Wolff said she attended the General Plan Meeting at City Hall last week. She also
went to the Health Fair at the Senior Center, and she attended Trails Day on the Bear Creek
Channel Bike Path.
Commissioner Wolff announced that the Arts Foundation had closed escrow on the 28 acres of
land between St. Francis of Assisi Church and Laguna De La Paz. Fund-raising and planning will
begin soon.
It was announced that the La Quinta Arts Festival was rated #3 in the nation for fine arts
festivals.

t was moved by Commissioner Rebich/Pedersen Nadler to adjourn the meeting. Motion carried
manimously. Meeting adjourned at 8:10 p.m..
