Wyssling, PE Senior Manager of Engineering April 14, 2016 Mr. Dan Rock, Project Manager Vivint Solar 3301 North Thanksgiving Way, Suite 500 Lehi, UT 84043 3301 North Thanksgiving Way, Suite 500 Lehi, UT 84043 P: (801) 234-7050 scott.wyssling@vivintsolar.com Re: Structural Engineering Services Heiny Residence 51770 Avenida Madero, La Quinta CA S-4874574 4.68 kW Dear Mr. Rock: Pursuant to your request, we have reviewed the following information regarding solar panel installation on the roof of the above referenced home: 1. Site Visit/Verification Form prepared by a Vivint Solar representative identifying specific site information including size and spacing of members for the existing roof structure. 2. Design drawings of the proposed system including a site plan, roof plan and connection details for the solar panels. This information was prepared by the Design Group and will be utilized for approval .and construction of the proposed system. 3. Photovoltaic Rooftop Solar System Permit Submittal identifying design parameters for the solar system. 4. Photographs of the interior and exterior of the roof system identifying existing structural members and their conditions. Based on the above information we have evaluated the structural capacity of the existing roof system to support the additional loads imposed by the solar panels and have the following comments related to our review and evaluation: Description of Residence: The existing residence is typical wood framing construction with the roof system consisting of the following: • Roof Section 1: Prefabricated truss with all chords constructed of assumed 2x4 dimensional lumber at 24" on center with interior wall supports 11' and 22' from the ridge. The attic space is finished and photos indicate that there was no access to visually inspect the size and condition of the roof members. All wood material utilized for the roof system is assumed to be Douglas -Fir #2 or better with standard construction components. The existing roofing material consists of tar and gravel. Stability Evaluation: A. Wind Uplift Loading 1. Calculations for uplift. are based on ASCE/SEI 7-10 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and other Structures, a wind speed of 130 mph based on Exposure. Category C and 2 degree roof slopes on the dwelling areas. 2. Total area subject to wind uplift is calculated for the Interior, Edge and Comer Zones of the dwelling. vivint. solar Page 2 of 2 B. Loading Criteria 10 PSF = Dead Load (roofing/framing) 20 PSF = Live Load (Roof snow load) 3 PSF = Dead Load (solar panels/mounting hardware) Total Dead Load = 13 PSF The above values are within acceptable limits of recognized industry standards for similar structures and in accordance with the 2013 California Building Code. Analysis performed on the existing roof structure utilizing the above loading criteria indicates that the existing members will support the additional panel loading without damage, if installed correctly. C. Solar Panel Anchorage 1. The solar panels shall be mounted in accordance with the most recent "EcoFasten Solar Installation Manual", which can be found on the EcoFasten Solar website (www.ecofastensolar.com). If during solar panel installation, the roof framing members appear unstable or deflect non -uniformly, our office should be notified before proceeding with the installation. 2. The solar panels are 1 1/i' thick and mounted 4 '/2' off the roof for a total height off the existing roof of 6". At no time will the panels be mounted higher than 6" above the existing plane of the roof. 3. Roof Section 1: Pullout value for the SimpleGrip OMG XHD Screws are based on test values provided by the product manufacturer (EcoFasten). and are conservatively 500 lbs/screw. Based on the variable factors for the existing roof framing and installation tolerances, using a thread depth of 2'/2' with 2 of the 4 screws embedded into the rafter per attachment point, panel anchor mounts will be adequate with a sufficient factor of safety. 4. Roof SectionMaximum allowable pullout per lag screw is 235 lbs/inch of penetration as identified in the Nation Design Specifications (NDS) of timber construction specifications for Douglas -Fir assumed. Based on our evaluation, the pullout value, utilizing a penetration depth of 2 '/2', is less than the maximum allowable per connection and therefore is adequate. 5. Roof Section 1: Considering the roof slopes, the size, spacing, condition of the roof, the panel supports shall be placed at and attached no greater than every third roof member as panels are installed perpendicular across members and no greater than the panel length when installed parallel to the members (portrait). No panel supports spacing shall be greater than three (3) spaces or 72" o/c, whichever is less. 6. Panel support connections shall be staggered to distribute load to adjacent members. Based on the above evaluation, with appropriate panel anchors being utilized the roof system will adequately support the additional loading imposed by the solar panels. This evaluation is in conformance with the 2013 California Building Code, current industry standards and practices, and the information supplied to us at the time of this report. Mark these using a vertical (N -S) chalk line on the center of the rafters. Spacing may vary depending upon project specific structural requirements; i.e. high snow and wind load areas may require lesser bracket spacing in the E -W axis vs. the maximum spacing. Max spacing is 48" for portrait orientation and 72" for landscape orientation. Consult project layout diagram for project specific bracket spacing on the roof. Install Rock -It Mounts to predetermined mount spacing. • The array skirt sections are the width of a typical 60 cell module — use the array skirt as a guide to lay out module placement. Note: The distance between the rows of mounts is calculated by the module dimension N -S plus 1 3/8" (35mm). Lag screw should be Installed as close to center of exposed shingle as possible. GreenFasTen FLaSHinG insTaLL 1 Locate the rafters and snap horizontal and vertical lines to mark the installation position for each GreenFasten flashing. 2 Drill a pilot hole (1 /4" diameter) for the lag bolt. Backfill with sealant. Eco Fasten Solar recommends an EPDM mastic. 3 Insert the flashing so the top part.is under the next row of shingles and pushed far enough up slope to prevent water infiltration through vertical joint in shingles. The leading edge of flashing must butt against upper row of nails to prevent turning when torqued. 4 Line up pilot hole with GreenFasten flashing hole. Insert the lag bolt through the EPDM bonded washer, the Rock -It slide, the gasketed hole in the flashing and into the rafter. Torque: The range is between 100-140 torque inch -pounds depending on the type of wood and time of year. The visual indicator for proper torque is when the EPDM on the underside of the bonded washer begins to push out the sides as the washer compresses. If using an impact wrench to install the fasteners be careful not to over torque the fastener. You may need to stop and use a ratchet to finish the install. www.ecofastensolar.com info@ecofastensolar.com 877-859-3947 ROCK -IT SCJ- STE'm II'ISTaLL .ROCK -IT SYSTEM' 1 Install EcoFasten Solar Flashing with Rock -It Mounts Follow GreenFasten Install instructions for flashing and bracket install on composition shingle roofs.
