ADJOURNMENT NEXT MEETING INFORMATION February , 2001 7:00 PM La Quinta Civic Center Study Session Room S:\Community Services\CSComm\AGN1-8 0 0 MEETING IN REVIEW COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION January 8, 2001 Commissioners Present: Deborah Bechard Mike Davis Cl f Michelle Henson (Vice Chairperson) Joan Rebich Victoria St. Johns (Chairperson) 0 The Commissioners were asked to review the mailing list and correct, delete or add names of people that should receive an invitation to the youth workshop. Commissioner St. Johns stated that the workshop will take place and is looking forward to hosting it again this year. The Commissioners will return the mailing lis with corrections to staff before the next meeting for updating by staff. Commissioner Davis gave an overview of the City Council meeting on January 2, 2001, regarding the Community Park Concepts. Commissioner Davis reported that the City Council agreed to relocate the fire station to another site, possibly the Miles/Washington site. He stated that the Consultant, Steve Lang, will take the Council's recommendations and incorporate them into the redesigned plan for the park without the fire station located at the site. Commissioner Rebich stated that she was concerned with the City Council's action on December 19, 2000, regarding Mr. Robey's comments on the use of Eisenhower Park. At the December 19, 2000, meeting, Mr. Robey stated that very few people use that park, and to spend money to enlarge the park would be wasteful in his opinion. She feels that one property owner should not influence the overall good of the community. Next Meeting: February 12, 2001 7:00 PM S:\Community Services\CSComm\MEETREV.010801.wpd a 9. BUSINESS ITE COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION MEETING DATE: January 8, 2001 ITEM TITLE: Youth Workshop, April 18, 2001 RECOMMENDATION: As deemed appropriate by the Community Services Commission. BACKGROUND: The Human Services Commission offered the Youth Workshop on April 30, 1997, and the Community Services Commission offered the Workshop on April 21, 1999 and April 12, 2000 at the La Quinta Senior Center. The Workshop provides an opportunity for adults in various professional fields to interact with the young people of our community. Last year's event brought elected officials, business owners and the general public together with students from La Quinta and Coachella Valley High Schools to discuss issues that were important to the youth of our community. Minutes of the April 12, 2000, meeting are provided as Attachment A. Due to the event being advertised in the Community Services Department Winter/Spring Brochure, April 18, 2001, was selected for the upcoming Youth Workshop. Enclosed is a master copy of the mailing list (Attachment B) that was used to invite community members to the Youth Workshop. Commissioners are asked to review the list and update the information, if appropriate. It is anticipated that the Commission will review the mailing list and provide corrected information at the February 12, 2001, Community Services Commission meeting. Once the corrected information is provided to staff, invitation letters will be sent to those on the mailing list. Additional tasks specific to the Youth Workshop will be discussed at the February 12 meeting. &\Community Services\CSComm\CSCRPT.128A ALTERNATIVES: The alternatives available to the Commission include: 1. Authorize the past mailing list for the Youth Workshop to be reviewed and corrected as needed; or 2. Do not authorize the past mailing list for the Youth Workshop to be reviewed; or 3. Provide staff with alternate direction. Dodie Horvitz, Community Services Director Attachments: A. Minutes of the April 12, 2000 Youth Workshop B. CVR. & WRITTEN MATEF Q• ceit,, 4 G a w COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION MEETING DATE: January 8, 2001 ITEM TITLE: City Council Action on Community Park Design At the December 11, 2000, Community Services Commission meeting, the Commission reviewed the concepts for the Community Park. The Commission then forwarded a recommendation for City Council consideration regarding the amenities for the park site. The City Council reviewed the Community Park concepts at the January 2, 2001, meeting. Attachment A provides the staff report presented for City Council consideration. After some discussion, the City Council directed Steve Lang, the Consultant for the Community Park project, to re -design the park eliminating the fire station from the location. This will allow the two acres to be incorporated into the park design. Mr. Lang will draft another park concept with the City Council's comments taken under advisement. It is anticipated that the new concept will be presented to the City Council by the first meeting in February.
