TITLE: Youth Workshop RECOMMENDATION: As deemed appropriate by the Community Services Commission. BACKGROUND: The Community Services Commission hosted the last Youth Workshop on April 12, 2000 in which students from various schools and organizations were invited to attend. The purpose of this workshop was to engage the students in a dialog regarding how they would like to see their community develop. After breaking into small groups, and discussing various issues, the groups reconvened and provided a list of activities and facilities that the students would like to see in La Quinta. The minutes of that meeting are provided as Attachment A. Staff has contacted La Quinta High School, La Quinta Middle School, Desert Christian High School and the Keystone Clubs of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Indio and La Quinta for student participation. Several personal contacts have been made to encourage advisors to encourage the students to attend this year's workshop. As part of the Youth Workshop this year, staff will provide a large "report card" of accomplishments from the last workshop. The goal of this exercise is to show the students that their voice is heard and responded to by the City and various agencies. The 2000 Youth Workshop Report Card items are provided as Attachment B. It is anticipated that the students will break into small groups, discuss the items they would like to see and these becoming the basis for next year's report card. Approve the list of items provided by the workshop attendees and direct staff to begin implementing programs as deemed appropriate; or 2. Provide staff with alternate direction.
