COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION MEETING
DATE: November 5, 2001
ITEM TITLE: Washington Street Park Name
RECOMMENDATION:
As deemed appropriate by the Community Services Commission.
BACKGROUND:
The City is developing a new park site at the west end of Bottlebrush and Saguaro
Drives. This park has not been officially named. The Community Services
Commission directed staff to notify the residents of the area and ask for their input as
to suggested names for the park. At the October 8 Community Services Commission
meeting, Mrs. Nelson requested that the park be named "Desert Club Manor" after the
subdivision's official name. Mrs. Nelson also requested that a sign be placed on the
wall along Washington Street identifying the area as Desert Club Manor. Staff
provided the form in which Mrs. Nelson could submit a request for a sign on the wall.
Staff was contacted by Mrs. Nelson recently in which she stated that she would like
the City to install the sign. The developer of the subdivision is responsible for
installing the sign, the City does not install subdivision signs. After this conversation,
Mrs. Nelson stated that she was not interested in the sign on the wall on Washington
Street.
The Community Services Commission may wish to consider an official name for the
park site. Possible names that may be considered:
Desert Club Manor Park
Desert Club Park
Manor Park
Desert Park
Or another name deemed appropriate by the Commission.
S:\Community Services\CSComm\CSCRPT.148.Washington Street Park Namempd
ALTERNATIVES:
The alternatives available to the Commission include:
1. Provide a recommendation for an official name for the park site located on the
west end of Bottlebrush and Saguaro Drives and direct staff to present this
recommendation to the City Council for consideration; or
2. Do not provide a recommendation for an official name for the park site located
on the west end of Bottlebrush and Saguaro Drives; or
3. Provide staff with alternate direction.
