May, 1991 Filing.Category: FASTENERS—Steel Gusset Plates (066) CONNECTOR PLATES FOR ROOF AND FLOOR TRUSSES AND OTHER TIMBER CONSTRUCTION ALPINE ENGINEERED PRODUCTS, INC. POST OFFICE BOX 2225 POMPANO BEACH, FLORIDA 33061 L Subject: Connector Plates for Roof and Floor Trusses and Other Tim- ber Construction. II. Description: A. General: The truss connector plates are formed by die stamping A-446 Grade A, or better, galvanized steel conforming with U.B.C. Standard No. 27-1 except where otherwise noted. The wood trusses are assembled in.a jig and the teeth are pressed into the wood members with a power press constructed in accordance with the man- ufacturer's specifications. B. Alpine Truss Connectors: The Alpine plates are formed from No. 20 gauge (.0356 -inch minimum) steel and have two 3/8 -inch -long by .122 - inch -wide concave teeth punched from a single hole. Each pair of teeth is 1 inch on center along the length of the plate and'/, inch on center along the width. C. Viking Truss Connectors: The Viking plates are formed from No. 20 gauge steel and have two'/8-inch-long by .140 -inch -wide concave teeth punched from a single hole. Each pair of teeth is .90 inch on center along the length of the plate and across the width of the plate each pair of teeth alternates with .293 inch and .350 inch, forming groups of two pairs of teeth. Each group of two pairs is .643 inch on center across the width. Where the root of each tooth meets the flat plate, a tooth -stiffening dimple is punched. 0. Trulox Truss Connectors: The Trulox plates are formed from No. 20 gauge steel and have .131 -inch -diameter holes punched in alternating rows. The holes are 2 inches on center along the length of the plate and are .7 inch on center along the width. The plates are fastened with nails such as common nails .113 inch in diameterby 13/8 inches long. The num- ber of nails installed is determined on the basis of the design loads to be transferred through the connector. E. Series 680: Series 680 truss connector plates are made from No. 16, No. 18, or No. 20 gauge steel. The Series 680, No. 20 and No. 18 gauge, have teeth '/2.inch long and the Series 680, No. 16 gauge.and the Series 680A have teeth 9/16 inch long. The teeth are 1/s inch wide, project perpen- dicular from the plane of the plate and are in longitudinal rows with every other row facing the opposite direction. There are three rows of teeth per inch of plate width. The Series 680, No. 20 and No. 18 gauge teeth repeat each 3/4 inch and the Series 680A and Series 680 No. 16 gauge repeat each 1 inch of length. Each tooth has a pointed end and a stem that flares out at the base. The tooth cross section is V-shaped. F. Series T: The Series T connectors are stamped from No. 20 gauge gal- vanized steel. The plate sizes may vary in width from 1 to 12 inches in 1/2 -inch increments and may vary in length from 13/4 to 171/2 inches in in- crements of inch. Two opposing teeth are formed from eijch die open- ing. The openings are 1/2 inch in length and '/,o inch in width and are spaced 'is inch on center along the length. The die openings are in pairs. across the width and are spaced 112 inch on center. There are 9.14 teeth per square inch of plate. The teeth are 1/10 inch wide, 5/16 inch long, pointed and V -grooved. G. Series K: Series K truss connector plates are formed from No. 16 gauge galvanized steel. Plate sizes vary from 1 inch to 12 inches in width, in 1 -inch multiples and from 15/16 inches to 235/8 inches in length in 15/16 -inch multiples. There are three pairs of teeth per inch of width spaced each 15/16 inch along the length. Two opposing teeth (one pair) are formed from each die opening. The die openings are .135 x.540 inches with every other opening staggered 114 inch along the length. There are 4.57 teeth per square inch, each averaging 3/8 inch in length and perpendicular to the plane of the plate. Teeth are pointed and V -grooved. H. Alpine HS connectors: The Alpine HS connector plates are formed from No. 20 gauge (0.0356 -inch) galvanized steel, two 0.327 -inch -long by 0.115 -inch -wide concave teeth are punched from a single slot. The slots are 0.875 inches on center along the length of the plate and are stag- gered 0.4375 inches on center along the length of the plate. An embos- sment in the plate is formed in the longitudinal direction. The slots are 0.375 inch on center when measured across the embossments. The width of the. embossment is 0.063 inches. The steel has a minimum yield strength of 60.000 psi and a minimum ultimate strength of 70,000 psi. The galvanized coating conforms to ASTM A 525 specification with a G60 coat- ing designation. . 1.1990 Accumulative Supplement to the U.B.C.: This report is unaf- fected by the Supplement. J. Identification: The truss connector plates are identified by the trade name stamped thereon. III. Evidence Submitted: Load tests. plate details and computations showing compliance with U.B.C. Standard No. 25-17. Findings IV. Findings: That the Connector. Plates for Roof and Floor Trusses and Other Timber Construction are alternate types of timber connectors to those specified in the 1988 Uniform Building Code, subject to the fol- lowing conditions: 1. Allowable loads and efficiency ratios for the truss plates are as set forth in Table No. I. 2. The allowable loads for the Trulox truss plates loaded parallel to the length of the plate are 66 pounds per nail for the .113 -inch -diameter nail or in accordance with Section 2510 (c) when installed in Douglas fir, larch or southern pine lumber. Nails within 1/2 inch of the lumber side edge or end shall be ne- glected. 3. The allowable loads may be increased for duration of load in ac- cordance with Section 2504 (c) 4.
