COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION MINUTES May 13, 2002 CALL TO ORDER gular meeting of the Community Services Commission was called to order at 7:03 p.m. in 1 Iy Session Room of the La Quinta Civic Center. Chairperson St. Johns presided over 1 ting. Commissioner Davis led the Pledge of Allegiance. ~BERS PRESENT: Commissioner Deborah Bechard Commissioner Michele Boudreau (excused) Commissioner Mike Davis Commissioner Victoria St. Johns (Chairperson) ~BERS ABSENT: Commissioner Joan Rebich ,FF PRESENT: Dodie Horvitz, Community Services Director IERS PRESENT: Kay Wolff Gary Calhoun PUBLIC COMMENT Mrs. Wolff addressed the municipal golf courses that are being planned for the Rar ocation. She asked if the Commission had taken a stand on the project. She stated that. price tag of $45 million for the land got her attention. She has met with City staff and ( Council members regarding the funding of the project and understands that the funds U! for this project cannot be used to fund recreation programs. She asked if the Commiss will be involved in the planning of the recreational amenities on the site. Mr. Calhoun stated that he was interested in applying for the Commission and wanted to : what that entailed. CONFIRMATION OF AGENDA CONSENT CALENDAR A. Approval of Minutes of April 8, 2002 B. Monthly Department Report for March 2002 It was moved by Commissioners Davis/Bechard to approve the Consent Calendar Unanimous. Volunteer Recognition Ceremony Staff reported that a Volunteer Recognition Ceremony will be held on Wednesday, M 15 at 5:30 p.m. in the courtyard of the City Hall. (The staff report included for tl item contained the incorrect date). Commissioner Bechard will be able to attend 1 event and plans on getting there at 5:00 p.m. Other Commissioners will try to atter CORRESPONDENCE AND WRITTEN MATERIALS Staff gave an update on Desert Club Manor Park and the La Quinta Park project. COMMISSIONER ITEMS A. Commissioner St. Johns asked if the High School seniors had submitted an applicat to change the name of Westward Ho Drive in front of the High School to Blackha' Lane. Staff reported that they were unaware of an application being submitted. B. Commissioner St. Johns stated that Council member Adolph stated in a City Cour meeting that, in his opinion, the Community Picnic had not been successful in 1 past. Commissioner St. Johns felt as though that comment was incorrect, as she ~ the other Commissioners felt the Community Picnic was very successful. St pointed out that people use different measurement tools to measure success. If I tool is the number of people, the past Community Picnics were not heavily attend, If the measurement is the enjoyment gained by those in attendance, the Commur Picnics were very successful. C. Commissioner Davis asked about the tennis court lights at Fritz Burns Park. Staff gi an update on the project to rehab the lights at the Tennis Courts. D. Commissioner Davis also stated that the picture of the lizard on the sign at the Cl Oasis Trailhead Interpretative Sign is incorrect for the text. The text is corre however, the picture does not reflect the information in the text. Staff stated that sign was extremely expensive, $20,000 and therefore redoing the sign to correct lizard picture may need to wait until funds are available for that project. E. Commissioner Davis also asked about the future plans for the date palm trees at Oasis. It was suggested by a BLM Ranger that the trees be allowed to gr "skirts" to provide habitat for birds. Staff reported that an arborist is being contac regarding the trees. F. ADJOURNMENT It was moved by Commissioners Davis/Bechard to adjourn the Community Servic Commission meeting. Unanimous.
