COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION MEETING
DATE: February 10, 2003
ITEM TITLE: Skate Park Components and Operations
RECOMMENDATION:
As deemed appropriate by the Community Services Commission.
BACKGROUND:
At the October 14, 2002 Community Services Commission meeting, the
Commission determined that a modular skate park would benefit the community.
By converting the roller hockey rinks at Fritz Burns Park, a modular skate park could
be installed. This recommendation was forwarded to City Council for
consideration.
On November 5, 2002, the City Council approved the Commission's
recommendation for a modular skate park at Fritz Burns Park.
At the November 18, 2002 Community Services Commission meeting, the
Commission directed staff to invite local youth to the December 9, 2002
Commission meeting to gain input as to the components desired for the park.
At the December 9, 2002 Cultural Arts Commission meeting, the Commission
heard from several skaters regarding the components and rules that they would
recommend and like to see implemented at the skate park.
At the January 7, 2003 City Council meeting, the City Council reviewed the rules
suggested for the skate park, as recommended by the Community Services
Commission and the City Attorney. The City Council adopted Resolution 2003-380
establishing the rules for the skate park.
Regarding the components for the skate park, bids were opened on January 27,
2003 for the skate park components. However, due to additional work needed at
the Fritz Burns Park Skate Park location, the bid for the components was not
awarded at the February 4, 2003 City Council Meeting.

The additional work needed at the skate park location includes court resurfacing,
fence removal and replacement, additional electrical work for vending machines and
parking lot stripping. According to the Public Works Department, this work is
anticipated to be complete by June. Upon completion of this work, the skate park
components can be installed. It is anticipated that the Fritz Burns Park Skate Park
will be completed and operational by July.
Staff has begun the preliminary planning for the skate park grand opening which
will include bands and food.
ALTERNATIVES:
The alternatives available to the Commission include:
1 . Provide staff with direction.
