COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION MEETING
DATE: June 9, 2003
ITEM TITLE: Upcoming Special Events
RECOMMENDATION:
As deemed appropriate by the Community Services Commission.
BACKGROUND:
Phase II of the Cove Oasis Trailhead is nearing completion and therefore staff is
planning a dedication event. Due to the nature of the facility, and the time of the
season, staff has selected June 21, 2003 at 7:00 a.m. to host the dedication
event. This facility attracts those that use the area for hiking, bicycle riding and
walking their dogs at this time of the day. Therefore, to avoid the heat of the day,
the dedication will be held in the early morning hours.
June 21 is also the day that the La Quinta Skate Park will be opened. This event is
scheduled for 9:00-11:00 a.m. at Fritz Burns Park. By combining the two events,
the Commissioners and City Council members are being asked to attend two events
on one day instead of two events on two weekend days.
Staff is seeking Commission assistance at both events. The Cove Oasis Trailhead
will be fitting the environment with refreshments limited to bottled water and a
healthy snack. There will be limited equipment set-up and tear down. The Cove
Oasis Trailhead set-up will begin at 6:45 at the corner of Madero and Tecate.
The Skate Park Grand Opening will consist of vendor booths, typical refreshments
and equipment for a facility grand opening. The Skate Park Grand Opening event
will begin set-up at 7:30 a.m. at Fritz Burns Park with tear down approximately
10:30.
ALTERNATIVES:
The alternatives available to the Commission include:
1. Assist staff with the two events on June 21, 2003; or
S:\Community Services\Community Services Commission\CSCRPT. 193.Upcoming Events 06-09.03.doc
2. Do not assist staff with the two events on June 21, 2003; or
3. Provide staff with direction.
