BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW: At the June 1, 2004 City Council meeting, the City Council acknowledged the passing of the City's first mayor, Fred Wolff. In honor of Mr. Wolff's dedication to the City, the City Council discussed the possibility of renaming a portion of the Bear Creek Trail in memory of Mr. Wolff (Attachment A). The Wolff residence is adjacent to the Bear Creek Trail, at the corner of Calle Ensenada and Avenida Montezuma. The Commission could recommend a portion of the Bear Creek Trail between Calle Ensenada and Calle Chillon be named in memory of Mr. Wolff with a small plaque at each of the shade structures at these two locations. ALTERNATIVES: The alternatives available to the Commission are: 1 . Recommend a portion of the Bear Creek Trail between Calle Ensenada and Calle Chillon be named in memory of Fred Wolff, the first mayor of La Quinta; or 2. Do not recommend a portion of the Bear Creek Trail between Calle Ensenada and Calle Chillon be named in memory of Fred Wolff, the first mayor of La Quinta; or S:\Community Services\Community Services Commission\CSCRPT.213.Renaming Bear Creek Trail..doc 3. COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION MEETING DATE: June 14, 2004 ITEM TITLE: Naming of 19 Acre Park on Montezuma RECOMMENDATION: AGENDA CATEGORY: BUSINESS SESSION: B CONSENT CALENDAR: STUDY SESSION: PUBLIC HEARING: As deemed appropriate by the Community Services Commission. BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW: The City Council approved the purchase of 19 acres of land zoned as Open Space as part of the General Plan at the June 19, 2003 City Council meeting. Due to numerous owners of the property the title clearance resulted in a lengthy escrow. However, the process is now complete and the City owns the 19 acres located west of Montezuma Avenue, between Ensenada and Chillion (Attachment A). The title "Montezuma Park" has been unofficially given to the property, as an identifying title. The Community Services Commission hosted a public meeting on December 8, 2003 in which the public was invited to provide input as to the development of the parksite, as provided in Attachment B. At this meeting, several residents submitted Park Naming Forms which are provided as Attachment C. The name "Bear Creek Nature Preserve" received five nominations, with one proposed suggestion of "Bear Creek Bike Path". The Commission may wish to recommend the name 'Bear Creek Nature Preserve" be considered by the City Council or may suggest another name be considered by the City Council.
