COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION MEETING
DATE: September 11, 2006
ITEM TITLE: Movie Selection for October 14, 2006
Open Air Cinema
AGENDA CATEGORY:
BUSINESS SESSION: C
CONSENT CALENDAR:
STUDY SESSION:
PUBLIC HEARING:
As deemed appropriate by the Community Services Commission.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS:
None.
BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW:
As part of the Fall 2006 events program, the Community Services Department will
offer an Open Air Cinema to the public on October 14, 2006.
Staff has researched various youth and family based websites in search of appropriate
Halloween themed family movies. Staff has selected (3) three movie titles for your
consideration.
1. LEMONY SNICKET'S A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS
Based on the popular children's books this film is the story of the Baudelaire
children who lose both of their parents in a fire. The children are sent from
relative to relative but the worst is the dastardly Count Olaf who knows that the
children are to receive a huge inheritance when the oldest girl is of age and
wants the money for himself. The intelligent children figure out his intentions in
this devilishly fun adventure. Rated PG
S:\Community Services\CS Commission\CSC Meetings\2006\09-11-06\B-C Open Air Cinema.doc A
2. THE PHANTOM TOLL BOOTH
Butch Patrick stars as a bored youngster who thinks most things are a waste of
time, until he drives through a turnpike tollbooth in a toy car and into a mystical
world filled with entertaining and educational creatures. Adapted from the
Norman Juster children's book, this wonderful live-action/animated musical film
features the vocal talents of Warner Brothers cartoon great Mel Blanc, and the
cartoon magic of some of the world's finest animators. Rated G
3. GASPER
A greedy heiress inherits the haunted Whipstaff Manor and discovers that the
house contains a treasure, which is guarded by three ghosts. Ghost therapist
Dr. James Harvey, and his daughter Kat, move into the mansion to get rid of the
supernatural creatures. Kat makes friends with a ghost named Casper, the
nephew of the 3 ghosts. Rated PG.
Staff's recommendation is "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" for its
ease of recognition in using the interactive marketing clues and overall popularity
among youth and young families.
ALTERNATIVES:
The alternatives available to the Commission are:
1. Approve staff recommendation; or
2. Do not approve staff recommendation and select from 2 other choices; or
3. Provide Staff with an alternative.
Respectfully submitted,

Dear La Quinta Community Resident,

(760) 777-
Your response to the enclosed survey is extremely important. La Quinta
Community Services Department is currently conducting a Parks,
Recreation, Trails, and Open Space Master Plan Study to set priorities for
the future development of facilities, programs, and services in the
community. Since a limited number of households in the La Quinta area
were selected at random to receive the survey it is very important that
you participate.
We appreciate your time. We realize the survey takes about 10 minutes
to complete, but every question is important. The time you invest in the
survey will help the City take a citizen -driven approach to make decisions
that will positively enrich the future vitality and livability of our
community.
We have selected Leisure Vision/ETC Institute, an independent consulting
company, as our partner to administer this survey. They will complete
the data from the survey and work with GreenPlay, LLC, our primary
consulting firm, to present the results to the City. Your responses will
remain confidential. Please return your completed survey in the enclosed
return reply enveloped address to ETC Institute, 725 Frontier Circle,
Olathe, KS 66061.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call La Quinta Community
Services Department at (760) 777-7090. The Parks, Recreation, Trails,
and Open Space Master Plan Study is a plan for all La Quinta community
residents. Please make sure your voice is heard!
