PUBLIC HEARING:
Participate in discussions with youth regarding the development of La Quinta.
WORK PLAN TASK:
Liaison to the Community.
BACKGROUND:
At the January 9 Commission Meeting, a motion was passed to invite student
leaders from La Quinta High School and La Quinta Middle School to attend Youth
Workshop Meeting with the intent of student assistance in planning a workshop.
At the February 13 Commission Meeting, a motion was passed to invite service
providers and businesses to the Youth Workshop Meeting including: Desert Sands
Unified School District, La Quinta Police Department, La Quinta Fire Department, La
Quinta Rotary, La Quinta Arts Foundation, Friends of the La Quinta Senior Center,
Friends of the La Quinta Library, La Quinta Chamber of Commerce, La Quinta
Playhouse, YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, Coachella Valley Recreation and Parks
District, La Quinta Lions Club, Soroptomist Club, Riverside County of Education,
Workforce Development Center, American Red Cross, United Way of the Desert,
Sunline Transit, and The Desert Sun.
In addition to service providers and businesses, a letter was also sent to organized
groups at La Quinta High School, Amistad High School, La Quinta Middle School,
John Glenn Middle School, La Quinta Youth Sports Organizations, Boy Scouts of La
C:Tocuments and Settings\jwilson\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Fi1es\0LKB8\CSCRPT.259.Youth

Quinta, and Girl Scouts of La Quinta.
At the March 13 Commission Meeting, a motion was passed to conduct the Youth
Workshop with the following outline:
- Group Arrives
o Snacks and Raffle tickets will be given out
- Combine youth with members of business organizations. Specific
questions will be asked to the groups.
- Individual groups will discuss questions and report answers and ideas to
everyone at the meeting.
- Open forum addressing new ideas for the City to expand upon.
- Raffle prizes will be given out. Music will be provided by the Community
Service Department.
Staff proposed a list of questions to be asked at the Youth Workshop Pre -meeting,
but due to the lack of participation from student leaders, staff is proposing the
following elements to be added to the outline and the following questions to be
asked at the meeting:
- Group Arrives. Commission St. Johns will welcome the youth and
introduce Commissioners and staff. Attendees will be welcomed and
introduced.
- Staff will provide an outline of the activities and events that have been
conducted by the Community Services Department.
- Specific questions will be asked to students.
o Have you ever participated in any of the activities the Community
Services Department has held?
o Please describe your experience? If not, why?
o What day of the week and time frame do you think most people
are able to attend special events?
o Do you receive the flyers the Community Services Department
sends out to schools?
o Are there any specific ways to advertise activities within the school
or ways of using outside agencies?
o What types of services would you like the City of La Quinta to
expand on?
o What types of activities appeal to you the most?
• Sporting, special events, special interests, classes,
excursions, etc.
o Would you like to receive a -mails on upcoming events, classes, and
or excursions?
Open forum addressing new ideas for the City to expand upon.

ALTERNATIVES:
The alternatives available to the Commission include:
Approve the meeting outline and participate in discussions with youth
regarding the development of La Quinta; or
2. Do not approve the meeting outline and do not participate in discussions
with youth regarding the development of La Quinta; or
3. Provide staff with alternate direction.
