Approve a proposed list of participating organizations and outline for the 2006 Youth
Workshop.
BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW:
As discussed at the January Commission Meeting, the Youth Workshop will serve as a
guide to the development of the Parks and Recreation Master Plan. A motion was
passed to invite student leaders from La Quinta High School and La Quinta Middle
School to attend the March 14th Commission Meeting with the intent of student
assistance in planning a future workshop.
In preparation of preparing for the Youth Workshop a list has been compiled of service
providers and businesses that would be invited to attend the event in May. As in the
past, a letter was sent out under the Chairperson's signature and then the list was
divided amongst the Commissioners to make follow-up calls as the event grew near.
In addition to service providers and businesses, a letter was also sent to all the
organized groups at La Quinta High School and Middle School inviting them to
incorporate the event into their lesson plans.
The proposed list of participating organizations includes:
Desert Sands Unified School District
La Quinta Police Department
La Quinta Fire Department
La Quinta Rotary
La Quinta Arts Foundation
Friends of the La Quinta Senior Center
Friends of the La Quinta Library
La Quinta Chamber of Commerce
La Quinta Plavhouse
-YMCA
- Boys & Girls Club
- Coachella Valley Recreation and Parks District
- La Quinta Lions Club
- Soroptomist Club
- Riverside County of Education
- Workforce Development Center
- American Red Cross
- United Way of the Desert
- Sunline Transit
- The Desert Sun
Staff is proposing the following outline to be followed at the Youth Workshop:
- Group Arrives
o Snacks and Raffle tickets will be given out
- Combine youth with members of business organizations. Specific questions
will be asked to the groups. Questions will be compiled from the information
that is gathered from the March Commission Meeting.
- Individual groups will discuss questions and report answers and ideas to
everyone at the meeting.
- Open forum addressing new ideas for the City to expand upon.
- Raffle prizes will be given out. Music will be provided by the Community
Service Department.
FINDINGS AND ALTERNATIVES:
The alternatives available to the Commission are:
Approve the proposed list of participating organizations and the meeting outline;
or
2. Do not approve the proposed list of participating organizations and meeting
outline; or
3. Provide staff with alternative direction.

The Middle School Teen Dance is a new event the department is coordinating as a
result of a suggestion from the Youth Workshop. The event will be held on Friday,
March 10 at the La Quinta Boys & Girl's Club. Staff is requesting assistance from the
Community Services Commission from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. to assist with chaperoning and
monitoring activities.
ALTERNATIVES:
The alternatives available to the Commission are:
1. Appoint one or more Commissioners to assist with the Middle School
Teen Dance; or
2. Do not appoint one or more Commissioners to assist with the Middle
School Teen Dance; or
3. Provide staff with alternate direction.
