ALPINE ENGINEERED PRODUCTS, INC. POST OFFICE BOX 2225 POMPANO BEACH, FLORIDA 33061 I. Subject: Connector Plates for Roof and Floor Trusses and Other Timber Construction. U. Description: A. General: The truss connector plates are formed by die stamping A-446 Grade Agalvanized steel conform- ing with U.B.C. Standard No. 27-1. The wood trusses are as- sembled in a jig and the teeth are pressed into the wood members with a power press constructed in accordance with the manu- factures s specifications. B. Alpine Truss Connectors: The Alpine plates are formed from No. 20 gauge (.0396 -inch) steel and have two No -inch -long by .122 -inch -wide concave teeth punched from a single hole. Each pair of teeth is I inch on center along the length of the plate and 1/4 inch on center along the width. C. Viking Truss Connectors: The Viking plates are formed from No. 20 gauge steel and have two 3/ii-inch-long by .140 -inch -wide concave teeth punched from a single hole. Each pair of teeth is .90 inch on center along the length of the plate and across the width of the plate each pair of teeth alternates with .293 inch and .350 inch, forming groups of two pairs of teeth. Each group of two pairs is .643 inch on center across the width. Where the root of each tooth meets the flat plate, a tooth -stiffening dimple is punched. D. Woodloc Truss Connectors: The Woodloc plates are formed from No. 20 gauge steel and have six %-inch-long concave barbed teeth formed per hexagonal plug. Plugs formed are spaced 1 inch on center along the length and 136 inch across the width. A . stiffening ripple pattern runs the length of the plate and %-inch- diameter nail holes are 'perforated 1 inch on center along the length and 1% inch qn center across the width. E. Trulox Truss Connectors: The Trulox plates are formed from No. 20 gauge steel and have .131 -inch -diameter holes punched in alternating rows. The holes are 2 inches on center along the length of the plate and are .7 inch on center along the width. The plates are fastened with T-shaped nails .113 inch in diameter by 1% inches long, .125 -inch square -shank nails 1% inches long or with ring shank nails .131 -inch in diameter by 1% inches long. The number of nails installed is determined on the basis of the design loads to be transferred through the connector. F. Alpine No. 16 Gauge Truss Plates: The Alpine No. 16 gauge (.0635 - inch) plates have pairs of teeth, each 0.375 inch long. punched perpendicu- lar to the base metal from slots that measure 0.540 inch long and 0.145 inch wide. Slots are alternately spaced 0.310 inch and 0.439 inch on center across the width, forming pairs of teeth. Each group of two pain is spaced at 0.750 inch on center across the plate width and at 1.25 inches on center along the plate length. Slots in each pair are staggered 0.200 along the length. This configuration allows for 4.3 teeth per square inch of plate. . C. Identification: The truss connector plates are identified by the trade name stamped thereon. M. Evidence Submitted: Load tests, plate detailsand compu- tations are submitted showing compliance with U.B.C. Standard No. 25-17. Findings IV. Findings: That the Connector Plates for Roof and Floor Trusses and Other Timber Construction are alternate types of timber connec- tors to those specified in the 1988 Uniform Building Code, subject to the following conditions: 1. The connectors are installed as set forth in this report. 2. Allowable loads and efficiency ratios for the Alpine, Viking, Woodloc and Alpine No. 16 gauge truss plates are as set forth in Table No. I. 3. The allowable loads for the Trulox truss plates loaded parallel to the length of the plate are 66 pounds per nail for the .113 -inch diameter nail and 68 pounds per nail for the .125 -inch square. shank and .131 -inch -diameter nail when installed in Douglas fir, larch or southern pine lumber. Nails within 1/2 inch of the lumber side edge or end shall be neglected. 4. The allowable loads may be increased for duration of load in accordance with Section 2504 (c) 4. S. Connectors are installed in pairs on opposite faces of the mem- bers connected and are not installed at locations where knots occur. 6. Stresses at the net section of the steel plates are not in excess of the values permitted in Chapter 27 of the code. The maximum tensile load is determined by multiplying the efficiency ratio times the gross cross-sectional area of the plate times the steel design stress. 7. Where a one-hour fire -resistive rating is required, see Evalua- tion Reports Nos. 1352 and 1632.. 8. These values are recommended only when plans, truss designs and calculations'are submitted to and accepted by the building official, showing compliance to the Uniform Building Code and specifying that fabrication inspection will be provided in accord- ance with Section 2510 M. 9. This report establishes design values only and specific trusses must be individually designed in accordance with recognized engineering principles. 10. When partially seasoned or wet lumber is used for truss fabrica- tion, load modification factor noted in Table No. 25-17.5 of U.B.C. Standard No. 25-17 should be considered. Diagonal bracing in the plane of the m bottochord is generally not required throughout the length of the building, but it is recommended that it be located at least at each end of the building. In most canes, temporary bracing in the plane of the bottom chord is installed at the locations specified on she architectural plan for permanent bracing, and is, therefore, len in place as permanent bracing. Figure 5 illustrates bracing in the plane of the bottom chard. Full bundles of plywood should not be placed on buses. This construction food Should be limited to B sheets Of plywood on any Asir of burn and Should be looted adjacent to the wppons. Figure 6(a) illustrates the necessity for applying diagonal bracing in the plane of the top chord despite the use of closely spaced prelim. It is recommended that this diagonal bracing, n shown in Figure 6(b). be installed on both sides of the ridge line in all end bays. 11 the building eaoaede 60 len in length, this bracing should be repeated at intervals ren greater than 20 feet. 2. All floor usses should be adequately shored if pellets of masonry materials are to be stored temporarily until the neat higher walls are finished. STAGE THREE: permanent Bracing is designed and specified by the architect or engineer for the nruclural Safety of the building. It is the responsibitity of the building designer to indicate size, location, and attachments for ell permanent bracing as required by design analysis. In gene,.l, it is desirable to design and locate all bracing m that it may work together with other structural pans of the building (such as Shear wens, portal frame, bearing wens, columna, beams, arc.) m achieve total Structural integrity. HE length of a web member. As described earlier in the discuss;on of building design end true design (STAGE ONE), diagonal bracing a end anchorage is essential to stabilize the lateral bracing. Diagonal bracing In the plane of the web members is also used to distribute unequal loading to adjacent trusses and to spread lateral forces to diaphragms w shear walls. Spacing of rows of diagonal bracing in the plane of the webs is a matter of judgment to be mode by the building designer. and will depend upon the puss soon, buss configur& bon, type of building, and the loading. Generally, for roof truttn, the sparing ramps from 12 feet to 15 fat depending upon how it relates to the bracing in the plane of the top chord. For floor pusses the aoa bracing should be approaimme,y 8 fns on centers. Lateral 2,6 strong -backs may ala be used for some floor ryrtems. Bradng in the plane of the bottom chord is also designed If, transfer lateral forces due to wind or Seismic loads into side walls, shear watla or other resinine suuetural elements. Diagonals between continuous lata,., astir. serve to stabilize the bottom chord. 11 it recommended that one complete bay Of diagonal bracing be installed at each end of any building, and additional such bays be located at specified intmals not to eattad 20 fed. Figure 5 illustrates the use of bracing in the plane Of the bottom chord. These recommendations for bracing wood trusses have been dnrved It. the collective expniwme of leading technical personnel in the wood truss industry but must, due to the nature of responsibilities involved, be presented only as a guide for the use of a qualified building designs, builder, or erection contractor. 14 -Ten—.-cru. score. Top Chord glare. This bracing is designed to resin lateral movement Of the top chord. It plywood floor w roof Sheathing is properly applied with staggered pints and adequate nei, ing, a conlinu ous diaphragm action is developed and additional bracing in the plane is generally not required. Some metal roofing materials may be depended upon to Man a diaphragm when properly lapped and hailed. Selection and use of these materia" is at the discretion of the building designer. 12 APPENDIX It is intended that this gmendia Contain only tentative recon me dations that may be used as a guide for onsite handling a nation until a more complete statement can be prepared. There may be Some instances in which additional precautions will be necessary. UNLOADING. If possible, busses shall be unloaded on relatively Smooth ground. They shall not be unloaded ona ough terrain that would cause undue lateral "pain that might result in distortion of puss joints.
