LA QUINTA CALIFORNIA 92253 760.564.0884 PHONE s 760.771.3606 FAX i SECONSLTNT@AOL.COM I was hired by Lindsley Construction to provide verification as to the adequacy of the roof framing on the store being remodeled for the Rug Gallery at the La Quinta Plaza. I am including an analysis of the sub-purlin, a sketch of the location of the A/C unit in relation to the existing roof framing and an a summary analysis. The A/C -unit combined with the concrete curb and plywood platform is estimated by the manufacturer to weigh 1,000 -pounds. The platform will distribute this load over 42 square feet (representing the platform and curb). The net live load contributed by the total system is 23.8 pounds -per -square -foot. This exceeds the code allowable live load for a flat roof by 3.8 pounds per square foot, however, the difference is less than a total of 80 pounds carried by each Purlin (42 x 3.8 / 2 = 79.8 pounds). The most critical member becomes the 2x4 sub -purlins, which are checked for capacity. The sub -purlins were well within their allowable capacity and are therefore adequate to carry the distributed load as indicated on the plan. The Purlins and Girders do not need to be verified as the additional live load contributed by the 3.8-psf is insignificant when compared to the total live load applied to the length of each girder (6 (ft) x 20 (psf) x 16 (ft) = 1,920 pounds). The additional weight contributed by the A/C unit is less than 5% of the total load to the Purlin. It is my professional opinion that the roof framing can safely support the additional A/C Unit, Curb and Platform as shown on the manufacturers or HVAC drawings. The location of the A/C unit shall be restricted to the area noted on the attached sketches and my office shall be notified of any changes in location. Additional Analysis may be required. s S. Specifications for Design: W airconditioner '= 800•lb W curb := 200 -lb r• A platform .42•ftz 5 W total '= W airconditioner+ W curb I W total = 1 '10 3 •lb W total W liveload ' = A platform w liveload = 23.81 'psf Check Sub-Purlin (2x4 @ 24" o.c. - 5'-9" long) Refer to attached Enercalc Analysis Summary: The A/C unit represents a Live Load weight applied to the roof. The weight of the A/C unit and the curb is distributed to the roof through the unit's platform i (42 square feet). The resulting distributed live load exceeds the code allowable limit of 20 psf by 3.81 psf. Therefore, it was necessary to verify that the 2x4 sub -purlins contain sufficent capacity to safely carry the additional load of the platform. There is sufficient capacity in the 2x4's to safely distribute the weight from the A/C unit and Curb. - The purlins will be unaffected by the additional live load of 3.81 or less than or 160 pounds added to the two Purlins that the Sub -Purlins connect to. This represents a total load of 80 pounds added to each Purlin which is insignificant compared to the total capacity of the member. Therefore, the Purlin and Girders are not affected by the additional load of the A/C unit and Curb. 7/26/99 1 i 'Dennis S. Wish,'P.E.
