Fibermesh Fibers shall not be used as a replacement for any reinforcement required for structural purposes by the Model Codes. 2. The structural design of the concrete shall meet the requirements of the Model Codes. 3. The fibers shall be blended into the concrete mix according to the manufacturer's instructions. This report is suject to re-examination in two yeam PROVED to Increase Concrete Abrasion Resistance A test program designed to evaluate relative abrasion resis- tance was developed to measure the effect of Fibermesh fibers in concrete when exposed to ex- cessive wear. The Army Corps of Engineers' "Method of Test for Resistance of Concrete or Mortar Surfaces to Abrasion" (Rotating Cutter Method CRD -052-54) was used. CONCLUSION: "Based on the data derived from the rotating -cutter method of testing, the use of Fibermesh will -increase the abrasion resistance by 105%. This added toughness with the use of Fibermesh will double the serviceable life of con- crete exposed to similar wear conditions. " Paul P. Kraai, P.E. State.of California Tests were also run in cooper- ation with the Norwegian High- ways Laboratories. Tests were conducted on Norcem Cement's studded tire, abrasion test machine. At 42 MPH utilizing steel studded tires and 10 ton axle loads the equipment can accurate- ly demonstrate the effects of 10 years of highway wear at the rate of 15,000 vehicles per day. CONCLUSION: The Fibermesh C-75 specimen exhibited a 52% increase in abra- sion resistance by sustaining 34.4% less material loss than the control specimen without fibers. Significantly, the C-50 Fibermesh specimen, containing less cement, still exhibited a 20% increase in abrasion resistance over the C-75 control specimen by sustaining 17.2% less material loss. The C-50 concrete has a base design strength of 7,252 psi while the C-75 concrete has a design strength equivalent to 10,878 psi. Photo and graph courtesy Norcem Cement AIS. PROVED in Static Load Test as Alternate to Welded Wire Fabric A comprehensive study was conducted in the laboratories of Wiss, Janney, Elstner & Associates, Inc., Consulting & Research Engineers by registered Professional Engineers. Results apply only to Fibermesh. PURPOSE OF THE TEST This test program compared on a large scale the flexural capacity and deflections of concrete slabs containing the recommended quantity of Fibermesh polypropylene fibers to a plain concrete slab and a concrete slab -Photo courtesy'Wiss, Janney, Elstner & Assoc. containing a typical amount of welded wire fabric (WWF) for dry- ing shrinkage crack control pur- poses. All three slabs were cast from one batch of concrete. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the study reported herein indicate that substituting welded wire fabric with Fibermesh at a rate of 1.5 lbs. per cubic yard (0.9 kilograms1cubic meter) of concrete yields: — Equivalent flexural strength capacity of the slab. — Equivalent load -deflection relationship. The flexural capacity of the slab containing Fibermesh was 2% higher than the slab containing welded wire fabric and 8% higher than the plain concrete slab. The load -deflection data indicate that, with respect to flexural response characteristics, Fibermesh fiber s can be used as a practical alternative to welded wire fabric which is commonly used for - shrinkage crack control purposes in essentially unreinforced concrete. The specimens were 21 " x 61' x 6" giving a height/thickness (HIT) ratio of 31/2 to 1 in order to simulate a column in a high rise building. All columns were tested in a standard compression strength machine. The rate of compression was .025ff per minute and was automatically documented on an X -Y recorder. Fibermesh specimen is free-standing after 2.Off compression CONCLUSION: Results show the ability of Fibermesh concrete to sustain itself and not shatter after more than 10% compression as com- pared to plain concrete which shattered completely shortly after first crack. This characteristic of Fibermesh concrete is important to applications where there are impact or seismic concerns for safety to life and property. Plain concrete fails at 0.32" compression PROVED to Increase Impact Resistance . A sophisticated study of the impact resistance of concrete containing Fibermesh was con- ducted at the University of British Columbia, utilizing an instru- mented impact machine developed by Dr. Sidney Mindess. The results indicate the foot pounds of energy to fracture - beams with and without rebar. The surface of the fibers are ploughed lengthwise during pull-out which indicates a good bond between fibers and cement paste." G.M. Idom Consult AIS Consulting and Research Engineers Denmark ways. They "bridge' the cracks that develop, thereby inhibiting further crack growth and enhance the bond between the concrete and the reinforcing bars by inhibiting cracking of the concrete under bearing stresses in the vicinity of the bar deformations. "It is worth emphasizing the point that there appears to be a synergistic effect when fibers are combined with conventional reinforcement, together, they are much more effective than when the effects of each are con- sidered separately." As discussed in the referenced report, the site soils consist primarily of silty sands that fall within the "very low" expansion category. in accordance with 1991 UBC Table No. 29-C. Based upon 199-1 UBC Section 2904, no reinforcement is required for slabs placed on soils in the "very low" expansion category. However. in the referenced report we did suggest wire mesh reinforcement to limit the potential for non- structural related shrinkage cracking. As discussed in ICBO Report No. 4811, the proper use of "Fibermesh" fibers, can be effective in the control of shrinkage related cracking. Based upon this, it is, our opinion that the use of "Fibermesh" fiber reinforcement along with properly spaced control joints in lieu of standard wire mesh reinforcement should be acceptable for slabs on grade on th-is project. The second plan check comment concerns the lateral pressure used* in the design of the basement walls. The lateral pressure provided in the referenced report (35 pcf EFP) is applicable to "active" conditions. Because the basement walls will be restrained, the "at rest" pressure would, be more appropriate for use in design. We recommend an equivalent fluid pressure of 55 pcf for estimating lateral' pressures with the "restrained" conditions. If there are any questions concerning this letter or the referenced report, please contact the undersigned.
