M. September. 1988 Fling Category: VENEER PRECAST CONCRETE BRICK AND STONE VENEER ELDORADO STONE CORPORATION POST OFFICE BOX 27 CARNATION, WASHINGTON 98014. 1. Subject: Precast Concrete Brick and Stone Veneer. H. Description: A. General: The veneer is composed of precast con- crete units Y to 3% inches in thickness with areas varying from 9 square inches to 2% square feet. The units are available in various stone and brick designs. The maximum weight of the unit is 12 pounds per square foot. The principal components of the precast veneer are portland cement, sand, perlite, expanded shale and pumice. B. Application to Existing Wood Frame Construction: The veneer units are designed for application over existing wall surfaces of plaster, exterior stucco or wood siding which provide a firm base for the veneer. Exterior well surfaces are covered with building paper conforming to Section 1707 of the Uniform Building Code. A 3.4 -pound lath is secured with galvarriz- ed furring nails to the supporting wood studs spaced 16 inches on center. Nails shall be spaced 6 inches on center and shall be of sufficient length to penetrate the studs a minimum of I inch. A S -inch minimum thick scratch coat of Type M or Type S cement mortac is applied over the metal lath. The scratch coat is then allowed to cure not less than 48 hours. A '''&inch - thick layer of mortar is applied to the back of each stone which is then pressed onto the scratch coat so that the mortar squeezes out around all sides. When all of the stone veneer are in place, the joints are grouted to provide additional embedment of the stone and to seal all edges around the stone. An alternate method is by applying a mortar setting bed onto the moistened scratch coat in areas from 2 to 3 square fat and then press- ing the veneer units onto the mortar bed. The mortar setting bed should be applied in a thickness of h to Y. inches. C. Application to New Wood Frame Construction: The veneer may be applied to open wood studs spaced 16 inches on center using 3.4 -pound, Y -inch rib metal lath. The lath if, attached to the studs with galvanized furring nails spaced 6 inches on center. The nails shall be of sufficient length to provide 1 -inch penetration to supporting wood studs. Prior to application of the lath, the studs shall be covered with building paper as required for exterior piaster. AIS -inch scratch coat shall be applied over the metal lath to provide a rigid backing for the veneer. The scratch coat must be allowed to cure not less than 48 hours before application of the stone. The veneer is then applied as described for application to existing wood frame construction. -The mortar shall be Type M or Type S. D. Application to Masonry: The veneer units may be applied directly to masonry backing without lath, provided the surface is clean. Painted masonry surfaces are first cleaned by sand blasting. The mortar bed is Type M or Type S cement mortar % to'/, inches in thickness. E. Application to Metal Panels: The application to metal panels is iden- tical to that for existing wood construction with the exception that the lath is attached by use of self -tapping screws. The screws shall be a minimum % inch long with %-inch head. F. Identification: Eldorado Precast brick and. stone veneer is identified on the boxes with the name "Eldorado Stone" and the logo of Eldorado Stone Corporation. 111. Evidence -Submitted: Product brochures, installation instructions and reports of tensile and compressive strengths, water absorption tests and bond strength tests have been submitted. Findings IV. Findings: That Eldorado Precast Stone and Brick Veneer as described in this report complies with the 1985 Uniform Building Code for adhered veneer, subject to the following conditions: 1. The veneer is not assumed to add strength or fire -resistance to the wall construction. 2. The veneer is not attached to wood frame construction In areas exceeding 25 feet in height above adjacent ground elevations except when specifically approved by the building official and based upon special consideration of design which includes provi- sion for differential movement. 3. The veneer is installed In accordance with this report and the manufacturer's initructions. This report is subject to re-examination in two years. CITY OF LA QUINTA BUILDING & SAFETY DEPT.
