The roof framing is 2x8 - Douglas Fir spaced at 24 inches on center. The grade of the lumber is at question. (619) 564-0884 On one of the members, there is a stamp that appears to be the word "STAND". Referring to the Western Woods standard for visually grading lumber there is no division for wood members greater than 4" in width in the Standard classification. The appearance of the iumber'is not clear. There are visuafknots that appear to be tight and located, for the most part, in the compression (top half) of the members. It is my'professional opinion that we would be safe to assume that the lumber (which is twenty some years old) is equivalent to at least.a number 2 graded lumber. Traditionally, number one grade or better is chosen for rafter framing. The attached calculations were run on the engineering opinion that the lumber is a Structural number 2 grade with bending stress assumed at 1450 psi with an allowable load Engineering -"For : duration increase of 25% as noted in the current code. The member was analyzed for a load comprised of clay tile (9.0 psf) and 1/2" Commercial plywood sheathing.(1.5 psf). The lumber is stressed to within 87% of it's allowable bending stress limit (where no eaves are considered to reduce deflection). Attached �Industrzal is a calculation that also assumes a 10% miscellaneous load added. It should be Resi_deritial further noted that rarely will the live load be realized in this climate. Seismic Retrofits It is my professional opinion that the existing rafters fall in a number 2 structural Foundations rating rather than a standard grade as interpreted for a stamp on one member. For Custom Homes additional safety, where knots are noticed in the tension•area of the member (lower Remodels half) care should be taken to inspect the member as the load is applied. Where noticeable deflection occurs exceeding 1/3 of one inch, the engineer should be Retaining Walls notified and the member braced or stiffened.
