Fire Protection Association Standard #211 states: 'Chirmeys shallextend at least hree feet above he highest point where it passes hrough he roof of a building, and at least two feet higher than any portion of a building wihin ten feet.' Locate each opening by dropping a plumb bob to the four comers of the opening below. Cut Roof Opening: Cut an opening in the rmf direcfly above the opening belour, and at least 4 indes larga than the chimney's outside diameter to provide at least a 2-indr dearance all around he chimney. lf he installation is located between rafiers hat are 16 indtes on cento, Close Clearance Shields (a sheet metal produd fahicated by DuraVent), may be used to avoid strucfural retaming. (Ftgure 8). The 2-inct minimum dearance to combustibles is not required when he fiimney passes hroqh Close Cleararrce Shields. \{hen using Close Clearance Shields, Ventilated Flashing rnust be installed. Refer to Figure r0, urhich pictures boh Ventilated and Non-ventilated Flashing. 6. lnstallFirestop Radiation Shield: One of two possible sifuations exist for installing he Firestop Radiation Shield. The oher is a multi,story building where the chimney passes hrough a Firestop Radiation Shield, hrough a ceiling, into anoher story, and then into an attic. Each of hese require a difierent configuration of he Firestop Radiation Shield. Assemble Ghimney Sections: Lover and seat he female end of he first Chimney Seclion in he Support Box. Sheet metal screws rnay be used to reinbrce the oonnection, however hey are not normally required. Screws are only acceptable in he outer liner. 8. lnstallAttic lnsulation Shield: lnstall he Attic lnsulation Shield where the chimney passes into an attic. lt's purpose is to prevent dehis and insulation from getting too dose to he chirmey. (Figure 12). An installed Attic lnsulation Shield b 14 inches high. ln attic areas where his shbld won't fit, a Sqmre Support Box, (wtridr is available in heighb up to 36 irdles), can be used instead of an Attic lnsulation Shield, provided it reaches hroryh he roof; referto tfie Roof Suppofted lnstallation section on rrge 14. lf the dimney is fully enclosed hrrugh he attic, an lnsulaUon Shield is not required, however, again, Ventilated Flashing must be used. Attach Flashing: ln new mnsbuction, assenble he Chimney Sedkms to a point above the roof, hen slip he Flashing over the drimney. On an existing roof, center and installthe Flashing before extending the fiimney above he roof. Allour space to permit sliding the next Chimney Section up hroryh he Flashing. Always insure the ctimney remains vertical, and hat at least a 2infi clearance to combustible materials is maintained all around. lnstallthe upper edge of the Flashirq under he roofing. Nail to the roof along trc uppa edge and the upper half on eadr side wifir linch roofing nails. Do not nail he lorer edge of the Flashing, or he lorer half of he sides. (Figure 14). Seal all nailheads wih a non{ardening watopnoof sealant. On flat or taned and graveled roofs, nail and sealthe Flat Roof Flashing to he roof on allsides wiffr rmfing conpound. Do not put screws hrwgh he Flashing into he Chimney Pipe. 10. (Figuru 18, and f9) in he Exhnded Roof Bracket sedion. lf you are located in heavy snor county, a "splitted should be hbricated fom heavy gauge sheet metal, and installed. (Figure 16). This wil! route he snow arcund the chirmey, and protect it. This item is not fumished by DuraVent. 11. Enclosures: Endose chimneys where hey pass through ocaryied spaces, induding dosets. Always maintain at least a 2 indt dearanoe between he dimney and any oombustible surface. lnterior enclmures may be constucted wih standard framing and sheahed wih sheehock o plywood. Use Wall Shaps, if necessary to maintain a minimum of 2 inches of air space between he chimrey and ombustible materials. OFFSET ELBOW INSTALLATION Elbows are manutactured in 15' and 30' angles measured fom he vertical. A 30' Elbow is he largest that can be used in an otrset. A 30' Elbow nny not be combined wifrr a 15' Elbour to make a 45o ofiset for example. Avoid Elbows if possible, since a totally vertical drimney is more efficient. \ffhen Elbows are necessary to avoid obstuctions such as rafters, ridgepoles, or joisb, use no more han cP $P{ iIOTMOREI}TAN 18 ilClfS 12 Figure 17 l 2 pairs of Elboun (4 elbows total) in any one chimrrey system. 1. Do not exeed the maximum lengffis between he Elbows specified in Table 3. Attadr he second Elbory above the Chimney Section to complete the ofiset (Figure l7). 2. Secure Offset: Place he Elbotr Strap's band around he angled portion of the top Elbov, hen tighten he nut and bott untilhe damp is firm. Wrap he Elbon Shap end over an adjacentpist or rafter and secure it wih at least two &penny nails. Do not add more Chirmey Sedions untilhe Elbons are supported.
