Ref- Report of Testing and Obscrvatians Performed During Rough Grading prepared by
Earth Systems Consultants dated Augur[ 18, 1993; Job No. 87-1405-P3, 93-08-747
Geoteehnicat Engineering Report pltpared by Buena Engineers, Inc. dated
November2, 1989. Job No. B7-1405-P1, ReportNo. 89-10-831.
As requested, the following Geoteehnical Update has been prepared to provide specific
recommendations the design and construction of tha proposed Jacobs residence within The
Quarry at La Quinta development. The referenced Geotechnical Engineering Report was
prepared for the entire Quarry project site prior to development, The residential lots were
originally rough graded during; the initial development of die site. Geoteehnicat observations and
compaction testing were performed during the rough grading and arc summarized in the above
referenced grading report prepared by Earth Systems Consultants.
Previous grading i17uiudW r'ecorlipacrion of tho underlying native soils and the placement of
engineered fill material to construct the building pads. The previous grading; report provides
documentation of the grading operations and confirms that the rough grading was performed in
acoordancc with the rccommendations of the Geotechnicai Engineering Report and applicable
grading codes.
Remedial Grading, Because the lots have been previously 1-oLL911 graded, the remedial grading
work ncccssary at tLtis time should be minimal. Prior to grading, the building pads should be
stripped of the existing vegetation. The surface soils should be watered and die surface should be
recompacted to correct any disturbance that may occur during clearing operations. Any fill
material placed within tite buildit4 areas should be placed in thin lifts at near Willi U m moisture
content and compacted to at least 90 percent relative compaction. Compaction should be verifir:d
by testing.

Structural Considerations. 1111e structural recommendations included in the referenced
Geotechnlcai Engineering Report remain valid. Allowable beating values, lateral pressures and
fric lionll coefficients as Outlined in the referenced report should be applicable for dbundation
design_ These structural values are summarized below.
Conventional shallow spread footings should be bottomed into properly compacted fill material at
least 12 inches below lowest adjacent grade. Continuous footings should be at least 12 inches
wide and isolated pad footings should be at least 2 feet wide. Continuous footings and isolated
pad footings ntay be designed using, allowable bearing pressures of 1800 ps1' and 2000 psf,
respectively. Allowable increases of 250 psf for each additional 1 foot of width and 300 p5f for
each additional b inches of depth may be utilized if desired. Thu maximarn allowable bearing
pressure should be 3000 psf. "I'he recommended allowable bearing pressures may be iTwr-eased by
one-third when considering wind and seismic loading.
Lateral farces may be resisted ley friction along the base of the feUndativns and passive resistance
oleos, the sides at the footings. A friction cUefficibnt of 0.50 tizzies the nornial dead load farces is
recommended for use in design. Passive resisiancv may be estJsnated using an equivalent fluid
weight of 300 pcf, if used in combination with the passive r@sistallce, the frictional resistance
should be reduced by one third to 0.33 tunes the normal dead load forces.
Cantilever retaining walls may be dcsignod using "active' Active pressures may be
estimated usingan equivalent fluid weight of35 pcf. Walls that are restrained should be designed
using "at lest" pressures. At rest pressures may be estimated using an equivaient fluid weight of
55 pcf. The given design pressures are applicable for frec-dra in i n g level backtill conditions using
native hackfill soils. if sloping backfill is planed, the rasulting Lateral pressures ShouId be
increase accordingly. ,Appropriate design pressures can be provided once specific 510pc
configurations and applications become known.
General: The project site is located in a seismically active area and the potential for seismic
activity should be considered in structure design. As a minimum, 41c 1997 Uniform Building
Code requirennents for Seismic Zone 4 should be utilized is the design of the proposed residcn ial
s1i'uCtures_ The 1997 U13C Seismic Design Criteria are summarized on the attached data sheet,
'File site soils are non -expansive and special expansive soils design considerations are not
ruqu irod.
Care should be taken to milliiliize, infil#ration adjacent to the building fuundaiions and pavement
areas. Positive drainage should be provided to direct surface water away from the structures. The
ponding of water adjacent to buildings and pavement should not be allowed. Proper grading and
possibly gutters and dawrtisporits should be considered to direct storinwater runoff away from the
structures find paved arirab- Landscape irrigation should be minimized and closely regulated.

The international Cotrference of Building Officials 1997 Uniform Building Code contains
substal)tial revisions and additions to the earthquake engineering section in Chapter 16. Concepts
contained in the updated code tlrat will be rc,leMant to constructionl of the proposed structures arc

Ground shaking is expected to be the primary hazard most likely to of 0ct the site, based upon
proximity to sigezificant faults capable of getteratittg large eni-thquakes. Major fault zones

progress of work we agreed to be involved with, and performed tests on
which together we based our opinion as to whether the work essentially
complies with the job reCluirements.
17. With any manufactured product there are statistical variations in its
uniformity and in the accurocyt of tests used to measure its quality, As
compared with atr,,er manufactured products, f6ld construction usually
presents large statistical variations in its uniformity and accuracy of test
results used to measure its quality. Thus, even with very carefLA observation
and testing, it cannot be said that all parts of the product comps`{
with the
lab requlrernents and the degree of certainty is greater with full-time
observation that it is with intermittent observations and testing. 'therefore,
our opinion, i ally on hosed reasonable certand ainty. that the work essentici y
the work means that there Is
only a 5#Cltlstic y
complies with the job requirements.
