Dear Tom:
As per our discussion, I have inspected the concrete walls of the residence under
construction for Mr. Paulden Evans on Bermudas in the City of La Quinta. I obtained a five
inch carpenters awl in order to penetrate the 4" polystyrene foam block forms. The awl was
inserted at roughly 32" on center in the horizontal and vertical direction. The purpose of the
test was to determine locations of void pockets where concrete may not have adequately
positioned. The concrete mix was verified only by the mix report issued upon delivery of the
concrete. The mix was verified to be as per the ICBO of a 5 slump mixture. No on site slump
test was performed.
I inspected both the inside face of the wall as well as the exterior face and found
that there were no voids with the exception of where plumbing chases occurred. The pour
was found to be consistent throughout all walls at 4" from the face of the block forms.. Please
note that I paid particular attention to the bottom of the wall where the coverage was most
critical and found all tests have provided adequate coverage.
I further inspected the placement of the horizontal, vertical and corner steel for the
section of wall yet to be poured. I ordered the steel to be re -centered in the wall and at one
corner where the spliced bars appeared to have drifted to the face of the foam block. This has
been corrected by Mr. Evans and pumping of the next lift of concrete occurred this morning
at approximately 10:00 AM.
As also noted on the ICBO report, the initial pour did not exceed 48" in height and
there will be two subsequent pours to obtain a total slab to plate height of 9'-4". As noted
above, the second pour was made this morning - again in a'48" lift. I will follow this report
with one more test of the middle section. I do not feel that a test should be made at the top
18" of wall in that this can be visibly inspected at the time of pour.
