2.1 Models 36 -Inch, 42 -Inch and 48 -Inch Solid -fuel -
burning Fireplaces:
2.1.1 General: lsokern fireplace and chimney systems are
modular refractory masonry units designed for field assembly.
The units consist of interlocking precast parts that are fitted
together in the field using a premixed mortar called lsokern
mortar, supplied with the units, to form a wood -burning
fireplace and chimney system. The parts are manufactured
using a proprietary mixture of volcanic pumice aggregate and
aluminate cement. The firebox, smoke dome and chimney
outer casing are manufactured with medium -density material,
and the flue liner with high-density material. High-
temperature refractory bricks, a minimum of 1 inch (25.4 mm)
thick, are provided to line the interior of the firebox. The
firebox is available in sizes noted in Table 1. See Figure 1 for
further details.
2.1.2 Installation: Anoncombustible foundation, adequate
to support all required loads, is necessary and must be
approved by the building official. Units are assembled on the
foundation by installing the base hearth plate, firebox wall
sections, damper assembly and smoke dome. lsokern mortar
is mixed with water until smooth and without dry spots, and is
then poured into the supplied lsokern application bag and
applied to one adjoining component face of each joint. A'/;
inch -wide (6.4 mm) line of mortar is applied'/, inch (12.7 mm)
from all edges of the face with two longitudinal lines between.
Mortar must be exposed at the joints when components are
joined and excess must be troweled off. Coverage rate is 4
pounds per 10 square feet (1.95 kg /M2) of area, and setting
time is 20 minutes. Pot life of the mortar is 4 hours. The
firebox hearth, side walls and back wall are then lined with
approved refractory bricks using a refractory mortar and grout
recommended by Earthcore Industries, Inc.
The chimney system is supported from the top of the smoke
dome on a steel -reinforced top plate. It is assembled starting
with a 6 -inch -high (152 mm) liner that offsets the joints in the
octagonal inner liner from those in the square outer chimney
casing. Tongue -and -groove construction of the chimney
components simplifies installation. The mortar mix is applied
in all joints as previously described. The outer chimney
blocks have provisions for installation of reinforcing bars. In
Seismic Zones 0 and 1, chimneys may include offsets with a
maximum of six offset blocks. The offset blocks are supplied
by Earthcore Industries and are illustrated in Figure 1. The
fourth and sixth offset blocks shall be supported by a concrete
block support wall. Where required by the building official,
details of support wall construction must be provided.
In Seismic Zones 2, 3 and 4 [under the 1997 Uniform
Building Code TM (UBC)], Seismic Design Category D [under
the 2000 International Building Code® (IBC)] or Seismic
Design Categories D, or D2 [under the 2000 International
Residential Code® (IRC)], the chimney is reinforced with
grouted vertical and horizontal reinforcement in accordance
with Section 3102.4.3 of the UBC, Sections 2111.3.1 and
2111.3.2 of the IBC or Section R1003.3 of the IRC.
Chimneys are connected to each roof, floor and ceiling with
two 3/,, -inch -thick -by -1 -inch-wide (4.8 mm by 25.4 mm) steel
straps or Simpson MST 60 straps with two '/z inch -diameter
(12.7 mm) bolts. Strap installation must comply with Section
3102.4.3 of the UBC, Section 2111.4.1 of the IBC or Section
R1003.4.1 of the IRC.
The portion of the chimney exposed to the exterior must be
covered with material such as exterior plaster or brick veneer.
Brick veneer is anchored to the chimney in accordance with
Section 1403.6 of the UBC, Section 1405.5 of the IBC or
Section R703.7 of the IRC. Exterior plaster and its application
shall comply with the applicable code. Terminations must
complywith Section 708 and Table 31-B of the UBC, Sections
716 and 2113.9 of the IBC and Sections R602.8, R1001.6
and R1001.16 of the IRC. Where required, an approved
spark arrester complying with Section 3102.3.8 of the UBC is
used.
For installations with vertical chimneys, the fireplace and
chimney are installed with zero clearance to combustibles.

2.0 DESCRIPTION
2.1 Two-piece Nitnalon Tile:
The tiles we composed of vitrified clay, machine -formed and
kiln -fired to various temperatures for different burnt -on colors.
Top and pan tiles are curved to approximately one third of a
circle, and have widths at the large and small ends of approxi-
mately 81/2 and 7 inches (2 16 and 178 mm), respectively. An
attachment hole is provided in the small end of the top file and
in the large end of the pan tile. Tiles are approximately 112 inch
(12.7 mm) thick, 20 inches (508 mm) long, and are installed
with a maximum 11 •inch (279 mm) center-to•cenler spacing,
and a minimum head lap of 3 inches (76 mm). The tiles have
a vertical exposure of 17 inches (432 mm) and have an
Installed weight of 10.7 pounds per square foot (522 kg/M2).
The the may be used to trim hips, ridges and rakes, provided
they are embedded in mortar or rooting mastic.
2.2 Two-piece Baja Mission THs:
The tiles are similar to the two-piece Mission tile, except that
the widths at the large and small ends are approximately 63/4
and 6 inches (171 and 152 mm), respectively. Tiles are
Installed in the same manner as identically to the two-piece
Mission tile, except the horizontal spacing is 9 inches (229
mm) with a minimum head lap of 3 inches (76 mm). The
installed weight of the tiles, when installed with a 94nch (229
mm) center•tocenter spacing, and a minimum head tap of 3
Inches (76 mm). is 9.4 pounds per square foot (45.9 kg/m,2).
2.3 "S" Tile:
The files are manufactured in a manner similar to the two-
piece Mission tile, except they are 18 inches (457 mm) long,
12 inches (305 mm) wide and 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) thick, with
two nail holes in the pan side and one nail hole in the cover
side. Various accessory Ules are available for ridges, hips and
rakes. The installed the weight is approximately 9 pounds per
square foot (43.9 kg" when installed with an 114nch (279
mm) center -to -center sparing and with a 3 -inch (76 mm) head
lap. See Figure 2 for details.
2.4 Eurobaja Tile:

The tiles are installed in accordance with Table 15-0-1 of the
code except as noted in this report. Nails are minimum No. 11
gage, 6/10 -head (7.9 mm), corrosion resistant roofing
naits having sufficient length to penetrate the sheathing at
feast 1 inch (25.4 mm), or extend through the sheathing,
whichever is less. Approved Ole ties may be used as after -
nates to nailing. On roof slopes over 21:12, the bottom edge
of each the must be secured with an approved clip.
Sheathing is minimum 1/24nehihlck (12.7 mm) plywood, or
code -complying solid sheathing, nailed in accordance with
the code. A 14nohby,24nch (25.4 mm by 51 mm) cant strip
is placed at the eave and fastened to the sheathirig with 5d
corrosion-resistart conrnon nails. VVhere used, mortar must
