Plan collector location to allow at least one foot on all sides for roof and at least 3" for racks. Allow for any roof obstructions. Collector layouts It is important that the solar collectors be installed in a way to ensure equal flow throughout the entire system. In order to accomplish this there are several points to consider when designing the collector layout. In split feed/split return systems the collectors should be equally divided between the banks and the return should be from the common high point. 3. In opposite end return. systems no more than 17 collectors should be installed per bank. . 4. In same end return systems no more than 12 solar collectors should be installed per bank. The return line should have the .shortest possible run back to the pool and needs to return from a common high point. NOTE COMMON HIGH -POINT RETURM EF VALVE RETURN FEED . Figure 6—Ensuring even flow to individual collectors Coupling the collectors to one another and, -mounting the collectors are procedures (steps) that occur simultaneously. Figure 7—Collector couplings 1. Short couplers (3-1/2- rubbe • couplers) are used to join the collectors together and to attach the vacuum relief valve. 2. Long couplers (5-1/2" rubber, couplers) are used whenever collectors are joined to PVC pipe. 3. When coupling collectors together, the clamps must be positioned close to the lip of the header, 4. The vacuum relief valve and end cap clamps must also be positioned close to t -ie lip of the header. 5. Tightening clamps: A. Tighten all clamps as they are installed. B. When you have completed the solar installation, re -tighten all clamps with the system on and water circulating through the collectors. C. Care must be taken when tightening, clamps to ensure they are installed straight and even. NOTE: Use split or bank packs if it is necessary to avoid obstructions on the mounting surface, or other specific site requirements. O SC NEAOL mounting Tile clip or tile stand off method The following tile roof mounting methods apply to both flat and curved cement type tiles. 1. Afix runner against the lip of the the row where the headers will be installed. Option 1: Tile Clips A. Runner is held down by the clips every four to eight feet depending on local code requirements. B. Determine clip locations and remove the tile above each clip. C. Using a 1/4"" masonry bit, drill out the existing high point nail holes. Choose the the clip hole that allows the runner to be closest to the tile lip. Secure the clips using the appropriate length'/a" lag bolts. Lag through the drilled tile hole, batten strip and sheathing. Replace the removed tiles. D. Secure runner to tile clips with #14 x 1"" self - tapping screws. E. Secure cap and base to tile clip located 3"below solar collector. Option 2: Tile stand offs (top and bottom runner required) A. Runners are held down by tile stand off into structural member every four to eight feet depending on local code requirements. The bottom runner should be located against the lip of the tile row below the collectors. -URES E CLIP Tile stand off method FILE CLIP S1 C' ROOFING RLE NNER RUNNER ST C ROOFING TILE Tile clip method XT B. Locate structural members then drill a 1/2" hole through the tile, apply roof sealanI and insert the stand offs. C. Lay runners on stand offs and drive lag bolt with washer into structural member. Apply additional roof sealant around stand offs. Repeat procedure until runners are completely secured. D. Install a base on the lower runner directly below the rubber coupler. Drive a #14 self -tapping screw through the base so that strap runs vertically through the slot. Loosely wrap the short header strap around the rubber coupler and lay into slot on the base. Screw cap down until tight but do not cross thread. 2. Install collectors. 3. Connector collectors together. 4. Attach ST clamps to top header, (2) per collector and secure to top runner. Note: It is important to allow for collector expansion and contraction. The bottom header strap should not bind the collectors in place. O Connect feed and return lines Long couplers are used when joining the collectors to rigid PVC piping. To connect the 2" PVC pipe to the solar collectors follow these steps: 1. Place long coupler over collector header and install clamp close to the lip. 2. Insert a pipe adapter into the long coupler. 3. Glue feed and return pipes to the pipe adapters. NOTE: It may be easier to first glue the adapter to the pipe, then insert it into the long coupler. 4. Always feed the water to the lowest end of the collector bank (never feed to top header). Be certain to always return the water from the common high point in the system. Install VRV and End Cap Install a vacuum relief valve per bank. Install an end cap to seal headers on end collectors. (See Figure 6, page 7.) Install the vacuum relief valve at the highest point but if air is introduced into the system move the vacuum relief valve to the bottom header, the feed line, or install a throttling valve on the solar return line. TO FROM SOLAR SOLAR ISOLATION VALVE II III FILTER FROM CHECK OUTLI POOL VALVE TEE Next, the diverter valve and PVC tee are installed. The diverter valve must either be non -positive or have a 1/4" hole drilled through the diverter for drainage. If a booster pump is installed a diverter valve is not required. (See Figure 3, page 1.) Install isolation valves on the piping going to and from solar. These components are always installed before a back up pool heater and chlorinators. Isolation valves are typically ball valves but a check valve on the "from solar" line is also acceptable. Install solar drain valves if solar collectors do not automatically drain. Valves should be installed in an easily accessible location. (Refer to required winterization, page 12.) Supporting PVC pipe All horizontal runs of PVC pipe must be supported every 4'. All vertical runs of PVC pipe must be supported every 10'. Pipe straps on the roof must be anchored to the mounting surface the same as for the collector tie - downs. Strapping should not be installed so it binds the pipe too tightly. The verticals are the portion of the pipe run that takes the water from the ground up to the roof. This is usually on the wall of the house and goes around the eaves onto the roof. It is standard to paint the verticals the same color as the house if the homeowner supplies the paint. IS VALVE A VEN Plumbing to and from the collectors Prime consideration should be given to system drainage (see "Required winterization";, page 12) and NEATER appearance when running pipe from pool pump to the collectors and back. Standard 2" schedule 40 PVC pipe is easy to work -with and readily available. 1 Figure 12—Solar loop Solar system loop. Optional automatic solar controller The solar loop is installed between the filter and the Various optional, electrically operated solar controllers optional heater. (See Figures`12.) are available from a variety of manufacturers. Solar The first component after the filter is a check controllers allow for automation in the pool environment. valve. Always leave room for check valve to be cut You should read and follow the manufacturer directions out and replaced. The use of a union check valve is to ensure their proper operation. recommended. Start-up, check list & winterization Use a flow meter to validate the intended flow rate System check 1. Run pump 3 to 5 minutes before turning on the solar system. If necessary purge the pipes by disconnecting the feed line and running the system. Reconnect the feed line once completed. Turn the Solar Controller to the on position. There should be a slight increase on the pool filter pressure gauge (normally 2 PSI to 6 PSI) When the isolation valve closes. The pool inlets should actively bubble for 3 to 5 minutes as the air in the collectors is purged. Check all plumbing joints for leaks.
