111. DESCRIPTION
A. General
Parallam PSL is manufactured' by laminating Douglas,Fir .or,
Southern Pine strands with, an Exterini-type adhesive -(phenol
formaldehyde). Strands are coated wtth,adhesive ori6ntedo. i6he
length of the member and.then fed, into a press inahe;dcsired lay-
up pattern. •The material is compressed under:heat`and pressure.
Parallam PSL is available in crosssections up'to 12 inches x24
Inches and lengths up to 66 feet.' ,Quality control testing•,-nd

Parallam Columns & Posts
Announcing a New Su'pportGroup
Parallam PSL makes an ideal column or
post for builders & specifiers. There are no
deep checks, cracks or twist, so common
with solid wood columns. -
And unlike other engineered wood
columns — glulam, or even LUL — Parallam
can be specified in square sizes, as well as
non -square sizes, as shown here.
The good looks of Parallam posts don't
have to be boxed in. In interior post &
beam style construction, a standard wood
finish is all Parallam posts and beams need.
And in both residential
nd light commercial
construction, the
load -carrying
capacity 'of .Parallam
Will fit builders'
needs.
®' For instance, an 8'
Parallam post measuring 31/2"01/2" can
support over 8,900 pounds — more than
4 tons! And a 10' Parallam post in the
standard 7"x 7" size can support' more than
91,000 pounds — that's the equivalent of
45 tons or 13/4 fully loaded semi trucks.
Parallam has no rival for strength, and
the moisture content of 11% means no
shrinking or checking. Exhaustive tests
have proven that Parallam allowable
design stresses are higher than those of any
competitive wood column.
Long term duration of load tests, as well
as tests for bending, shear, internal bond,
fire resistance & fastener holding have
clearly shown the superiority of Parallam
over other engineered wood products and
over solid sawn wood.
Quality validation of Parallam PSL from
the APA (American Plywood Association),
and code acceptances from municipal,
state & national authorities (NER-292)
mean problem -free specification
thrrniQhnrnt Nnrth America.
Parallam Beams & Headers.:
The Fit is Right
Parallam beams & headers are the
strongest on the market today — stiffer,
stronger and more versatile than
conventional lumber, glulam or laminated
veneer lumber (LUL). We even understate
our design stresses. So you can specify
Parallam with complete confidence.
Parallam Beam Sizes
Although Parallam is sold in convenient
13/4" thicknesses for single or multi -ply
applications, most builders and framers
prefer to use solid Parallam in 31/2", 51/4"
or 7" thicknesses.
They appreciate the time saved and the
problems avoided. No cupping, no site
fabrication and a precise fit every time.
Solid 31/2" thicknesses are a perfect
match for standard 2x4 stud walls. No
need to construct oversize walls to
accommodate 3 or 4 -ply nail -laminated
lumber beams.
Parallam beam sizes match all best-
selling I -joists and conventional .
lumber joists. N
Parallam beams and headers are offered
in more thicknesses and depths than any
competing product.
Check with your local tech rep for sizes
available in your area. Other sizes are
also available.
