Introduction Since 1969, FAFCO's goal has been to design, test, and produce the world's highest performing solar pool heating systems. Installing a FAFCO solar pool heating system is straight -forward and relatively simple. This manual provides a step-by-step installation procedure for most applications. For those situations not covered in this manual, please contact your FAFCO representative. Please read this manual completely before starting the installation and take special care to comply with all local ordinances and building codes. WARNINGA Safety should always be of primary concern and is especially important whenever you are working on a roof, around power lines or electricity. Failure to observe safe practices on a roof or other elevated structures may result in falling and serious injury. B. Pool Filter—Cleans the pool water. C. Backup Pool Heater (optional)—A backup heater may be installed on pools used year- round, or where a specific pool temperature is maintained regardless of weather conditions. 6. Short couplers (3-1/2" rubber couplers) are used to join the collectors together and to attach the vacuum relief valve. 2. Long couplers (5-1/2- rubber couplers) are used whenever collectors are joined to PVC pipe. 3. When coupling collectors together, the clamps must be positioned close to the lip of the header. 4. The vacuum relief valve and end cap clamps must also be positioned close to the lip of the header. 5. Tightening clamps: A. Tighten all clamps as they are installed. B. When you have completed the solar installation, re -tighten all clamps with the system on and water circulating through the collectors. C. Care must be taken when tightening clamps to ensure they are installed straight and even. CONNECT PIPES, VRV & END CAP Connect feed and return lines Long couplers are used when joining the collectors to rigid PVC piping. To connect the 2- PVC pipe to the solar collectors follow these steps: 1. Place long coupler over collector header and install clamp close to the lip. 2. Insert a pipe adapter into the long coupler. 3. Glue feed and return pipes to the pipe adapters. NOTE: It may be easier to first glue the adapter to the pipe, then insert it into the long coupler. 4. Always feed the water to the lowest end of the collector bank (never feed to top header). Be certain to always return the water from the common high point in the system. Install VRV and End Cap Install a vacuum relief valve per bank. Install an end cap to seal headers on end collectors. (See Figure 5, page 4.) Install the vacuum relief valve at the highest point but if air is introduced into the system move the vacuum relief valve to the bottom header, the feed line, or install a throttling valve on the solar return line. 5. PLUMB COMPONENTS TO FROM SOLAR SOLAR ISOLATION ISOLATION III III / VALVE VALVE FILTER FROM CHECK OUTLET TO POOL VALVE TEE POOL Figure 1 1—Solar loop Solar system loop The solar loop is installed between the filter and the optional heater. (See Figures 11.) The first component after the filter is a check valve. Always leave room for check valve to be cut out and replaced. The use of a union check valve is recommended. Start-up & winterization Use a flow meter to validate the intended flow rate. System check 1. Run pump 3 to 5 minutes before turning on the solar system. If necessary purge the pipes by disconnecting the feed line and running the system. Reconnect the feed line once completed. O Next, the diverter valve and PVC tee are installed. The diverter valve must either be non -positive or have a 1/47 hole drilled through the diverter for drainage. If a booster pump is installed a diverter valve is not required. (See Figure 3, page 1.) Install isolation valves on the piping going to and from solar. These components are always installed before a back up pool heater and chlorinators. Isolation valves are typically ball valves but a check valve on the "from solar" line is also acceptable. Install solar drain valves if solar collectors do not automatically drain. Valves should be installed in an easily accessible location. (Refer to required winterization, page 9.) Supporting PVC pipe All horizontal runs of PVC pipe must be supported every 4'. All vertical runs of PVC pipe must be supported every 10'. Pipe straps on the roof must be anchored to the mounting surface the same as for the collector tie - downs. Strapping should not be installed so it binds the pipe too tightly. The verticals are the portion of the pipe run that takes the water from the ground up to the roof. This is usually on the wall of the house and goes around the eaves onto the roof. It is standard to paint the verticals the same color as the house if the homeowner supplies the paint. Plumbing to and from the collectors Prime consideration should be given to system drainage (see "Required winterization", page 9) and appearance when running pipe from pool pump to the collectors and back. Standard 2- schedule 40 PVC pipe is easy to work with and readily available. 6. INSTALL CONTROL SYSTEM Optional automatic solar controller Various optional, electrically operated solar controllers are available from a variety of manufacturers. Solar controllers allow for automation in the pool environment. You should read and follow the manufacturer directions to ensure their proper operation. If an automatic solar controller is being installed, there are benefits to re- locating the diverter valve to the return line. 2. Turn the Solar Controller to the on position. There should be a slight increase on the pool filter pressure gauge (normally 2 PSI to 6 PSI) When the isolation valve closes. The pool inlets should actively bubble for 3 to 5 minutes as the air in the collectors is purged. 3. Check all plumbing joints for leaks. 4. Re -tighten all collector coupler clamps while the system is on. 5. Check all collector couplings for leaks. 6. Feel the surface of the collectors, they should be cool to the touch as the suns energy is transferred to the pool water. Congratulations you have completed the FAFCO solar pool heating system installation. If the homeowner is available, explain to him or her how the system works, how to adjust the control, what to expect fron the system, and any maintenance that is required. Be sure to give the homeowner his or her manual and warranty. REQUIRED WINTERIZATION NOTE: COLLECTORS ARE WARRANTED AGAINST FREEZE DAMAGE WHEN INSTALLED IN STRICT ACCORDANCE WITH FAFCO'S INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS: Solar collectors must be completely drained and isolated before winter to prevent freeze damage. Solar collectors will not be damaged by freezing conditions when properly drained and isolated as follows: 1. Turn off the solar system. 2. Turn off the pool pump and pool sweep. 3. Open optional solar drain valves. 4. Remove end caps and vacuum relief valve. Leave off and store in a safe place for winter. 5. Let the system completely drain for one hour. 6. If the solar collectors are mounted on less than a 100 pitch, then the solar collectors must be manually lifted and drained. Blowing the lines with a shop vac, leaf blower, or compressor will NOT remove water completely. 7. Close isolation valve(s) for winter. (See Figure .12.) 8. Ensure the solar system remains off.for winter. Repair procedures A tube leak can be repaired if damage is located at least 3"" away from the header. Contact your FAFCO representative for information regarding other damage. The following procedure outlines the steps to repair a tube leak using a FAFCO supplied collector repair kit. Repair kit components Repair Plug ' . l Tube Cutting Knife Plug Insertion Tool 9. The pool pump, filter, and svveep can now be used while isolated from the solar System. Open Closed position: position: Handle in Handle line with across valve body valve body Figure 12 - Solar Isolation Valve(s) Solar isolation during pool maintenance Follow these steps before filter deaning, backwashing, or pool vacuuming: 1. Turn the pump and solar system off. 2. Close the solar isolation valves. (See Figure 12.) 3. Proceed with filter cleaning or vacuuming. 4. After pool maintenance is complete, run the pump for a few minutes to clear any debris from pool lines. 5. Open the solar isolation valves. 6. Turn the solar system on. 1. Locate the leak and mark the tube location on each end. A bright wax based marker is ideal. 2. Using the cutting knife, start approximately 3" away from the header, then citting back away from the header, scoop out tl-e top portion of the collector tube 1 to 1-1/2-lonc to insert the plug through. Ensure the adjacent tubes are not cut. 3. Coat the plug and inside of the tube with soapy water. 4. Insert the plug pointed end first into the opened tube section. Using the plug insertion tool, push the plug gently, without stopping, into the tube until it reaches the header. 5. Remove the insertion tool wit; a quick twisting motion. 6. Take a second plug and slide it in, stopping as it hits the first plug. Repeat this procedure at the opposite end as well. This repair completely isolated the damaged tube. Repeat as necessary to repair additional damaged tubes. The SunSaverlm solar collector is proudly manufactured in Chico, California.
