Project: Proposed Residences
Lots 1, 6 and 15 on Quarry Ranch Road
The Quarry
La Quinta, California
Subject: Geotechnical Update
Ref: Geotechnical. Engineering Report prepared by Buena Engineers, Inc. dated
November 2, 1989, Job No. B7 -1405-P1, Report No. 89-10-831
As requested, the following information is provided as it relates to the design and construction of
the residential structures proposed for lots located on Lots 1, 6 and 15 along Quarry Ranch Road
within The Quarry at La Quinta development in the City of La Quinta, California. The referenced
Geotechnical Engineering Report was"prepared for the Quarry at La Quinta project'site prior to
development. The residential lots were originally rough graded during the initial development
of the Quarry at La Quinta project site. Geotechnical observations and compaction testing were
performed during the rough grading and are summarized in a rough grading report prepared by
Earth Systems Consultants.
Previous grading included recompaction of the underlying native soils and the placement of
engineered fill material to construct the subject lot and adjacent lots. The previous grading report
provides documentation of the grading operations and confirms that the rough grading was
performed in accordance with the recommendations of the Geotechnical Engineering Report and
applicable grading codes.
Remedial Grading: Because the'lots have been previously rough graded, the remedial grading
work necessary at this time should be minimal. Prior to grading, the surface should be stripped
of the existing vegetation and the associated root systems. The surface soils should be watered
and the surface should be recompacted to correct any disturbance that may occur during clearing '
operations. Any fill material placed within the building areas should be placed in thin lifts at
near optimum moisture content and compacted to at least 90 percent relative compaction.
Compaction should be verified by testing.
July 13, 2006 -2- Project _Vo: 544-06562
06-07-713
Structural Considerations: The structural recommendations included in the referenced
Geotechnical Engineering Report remain valid. Allowable bearing values, lateral pressures and
frictional coefficients as outlined in the referenced report should be applicable for foundation
design. These structural values are summarized below.
Conventional shallow spread footings should be bottomed into properly compacted fill material
at least 12 inches below lowest adjacent grade. Continuous footings should be at lust 12 inches
wide and isolated pad footings should be at least 2 feet wide. Continuous footings and isolated
pad footings may be designed using allowable bearing pressures of 1800 psf and 2000 psf,
respectively. Allowable increases of 250 psf for each additional 1 foot of width and 300 psf for
each additional 6 inches of depth may be utilized if desired. The maximum allowable bearing .
pressure should be 3000 psf. The recommended allowable bearing pressures may be increased
by one-third when considering wind and seismic loading.
Lateral forces may be resisted by friction along the base of the foundations and passive resistance
along the sides of the footings. A friction coefficient of 0.50 times the normal dead load forces is
recommended for use in design: Passive resistance may be estimated using an equivalent fluid
weight of 300 pcf. If used in combination with the passive resistance, the frictional resistance
should be reduced by one third to 0.33 times the normal dead load forces.
Cantilever retaining walls may be designed using "active" pressures. Active preSL;ures may be
estimated using an equivalent fluid weight of 35 pcf. Walls that are restrained should be
designed using "at rest' pressures. At rest pressures may be estimated using an equivalent fluid
weight of 55 pcf. The given design pressures are applicable for free -draining level backfill
conditions using native backfill soils. If sloping backfill is planned, the resulting lateral pressures
should be increase accordingly. Appropriate design pressures can be provided once specific
slope configurations and applications become known.
The project site is located in a seismically active area and the potential for seismic activity should
be considered in structure design. As a minimum, the 1997 Uniform Building Code requirements
for Seismic Zone 4 should be utilized in the design of the proposed residential strictures. The
1997 UBC Seismic Design Criteria are summarized on the attached data sheet. The site soils are
non -expansive and special expansive soils design considerations are not required.
Care should be taken to minimize infiltration adjacent to the building foundations and pavement
areas. Positive drainage should be provided to direct surface water away from the structures.
The ponding of water adjacent to buildings and pavement should not be allowed. Proper
grading and possibly gutters and downspouts should be considered to direct stormwater runoff
away from the structures and paved areas. Landscape irrigation should be minimized and
closely regulated.

2001 CALIFORNIA BUILDING CODE SEISMIC DESIGN INFORMATION
The California Code of Regulations, Title 24 (2001 California Building Code) and 1997 Uniform
Building Code, Chapter 16 of this code, contain substantial revisions and additions -to earthquake
engineering design criteria. Concepts contained in the code that will be relevant to construction
of the proposed structures are summarized below.
Ground shaking is expected to be the primary hazard most likely to affect the sit-, based upon
proximity to significant faults capable of generating large earthquakes_ Major fault zones
considered to be most likely to create strong ground shaking at the site are listed below.

Notes:
1. Airflow rates of 1800 CFM or more require two return air connections. Data is for operation with filter(s).
2. Temperature rises in the table are approximate. Actual temperature rises may vary.
3. Temperature rises and airflows for external static pressures greater than 0.5 are for reference only. These cond-tions are not recommended.

The PSA1 BD Series of air conditioners offers exceptional perfor-
mance from a small, compact package. The unit, when combined
with our engineered coils or air handlers, offers a full line of
quality, split system cooling equipment. TI -e PSA1 BD is rated at
13 SEER when matched with our multi spe=d air handler or fur-
nace. When matched with our variable speed air handler, or our
variable speed blower kits, the PSA1 BD is rated up to 14 SEER.
Units are ideally sized for slab or rooftop mounting.
Features and Benefits
• Durable Attractive Stainless Steel Cabinet Durable brushed stainless
steel protects the coil from yard hazards and extreme we Unit is
trimmed in a silicone -protected polyester finite with a 950 hoursaltspray
that resists corrosion 50% better than compa-able units.
• Quiet P/uilm Compressor Sound Blanket - C=ngineered to significantly
reduce unwanted noise.
• Copper Tube /Aluminum Fin Coils -Coils are designed to optimize heat
transfer, minimize size and cost, and increase durability and reliability.
• Permanently Lubricated Motor -A heavy dut- PSC motor for long lasting
reliability and quietoperation. Requires no maintenance and is completely
protected from rain and snow.
• Ful/Service Valves -These brass valves are easily accessible and simplify
servicing of the refrigeration system.
• Removable Top Grille Assembly - Allows ease of service. from the top
without disconnecting fan motor leads.
• LowrPressureControl-Loss of charge protecticn ensures longcompressor
I ife.
• Liquid Line Filter/Drier - Included with unit, field installed.
• One Piece Top/Orifice - Designed for maximum airflow and quiet
operation.
• 2-1/2"Pedestal Base -The sturdy base keeps the bottom of the coil out of
harms way. Secondly, the base has weep holes along the edge to allow
the water from rain to flow away from the unit.
• Five Minute Restart Time Delay -When the unkshuts down; afive minute
delay keeps the unit from restarting, eliminai:ing the highest cause for
compressor failure.
• Easy Compressor and Control Access - Designed to make servicing
easier for the contractor, access panels are provided to all' controls and
the compressor from the side of the unit.
• 10 Year Residential Parts and Labor Warranty and 5 Year
Dependability Promise
The best warranty in the business.
