Dear Mr. Dolan;
I have looked at the fiaming conditions at the remodel site and for the Vordale residence and
have the following findings:
l f The wood beam spaniing across the entryway is effectively a 4x10, when a 41112 was
specified. I have reviewed the loads and span for this installation and find that the' as -
built condition i&aceeiptable, since the loads in this area are not severe. Deflection of the
beam is calculated at .315 inches, which is witb6 code tolemces, but is nearly double
that ofthe 4x12 and may be visible. ,
2. The short beam running from the side of the entry wall and hanging ftom the
4xlObeam referenced in item #1 above was built as a 4x10, when a 4%12 was
specified. I have reviewed the plans and since the span for thin beam is so minor, The
4x10 will be fine. It was only specified as a U12 to flush out with the bears referenced in
item #1 anyway. The LU5410 hanger used instead of the specified JHU412 is fine as
well.
The beam running across the kitchen opening into the new nook is a 400, when a
4x12 is specified. I have reviewed the loads and span for this installation, and find that
the as -built condition is -acceptable. Deflection of the beam is calculated at .09 inches,
which is well within code tolerances, but is dearly double Haat of the 4x12 and may be
visible.
4. The header over the entry door was built as a 4x6 with a U6 and %" plywood
scabbed to the side of it, when a 6x6 header was specified. I have reviewed the
loading and.span for this installation and find that the as-buih condition is acceptable.
The 6x6 was specified because it is in a 6x wall.
5, There it a 2" uotch at the end of the beam spanning over the new breakfast nook, at
the eastern end of the beam. This notch is outside the faili re plane of the .beam in both
shear and bending. It sbould have no affect on the perfopua nce of the beam,
ice, while ati of1hese. revi¢ians calculate out to be in conformance with the building code, the .
changes in items l and 3 have almost doubled the calculated deflection in the beams. While this

prediction of the actual deflection that will occur.
