DESCRIPTION OF WORK
- Existing fireplace was constructed with reinforcing bar, but during
the remodel process, it was discovered that the cells with steel were not
grouted. Reinforcing steel not encased in grout has minimal structural
value. Therefore it was decided between the contractor and owner of the
residence to demolish the existing fireplace and re -construct with new
materials with reinforcing encased in concrete grout. The contractor used
a hammer drill to map the existing foundation and it was determined that
the existing foundation under the existing fireplace is 4' wide x 9' long
x 18" deep. Only 2 existing #4 vertical re -bar extend from the existing
footing. The remaining vertical re -bar will have to be embedded 8" minimum
into the existing with epoxy.
If, in fact, that the existing footing is 9' x 14' x 18" deep, it is
adequate to support the new construction. The following is a check of the
soil bearing pressure:
Masonry wall ........... 6 x 2.5 x 15' x 72 = 16,200 lbs
Footing................4 x 9 x 1.5 x 144 = 7,776 lbs
Total. .:.....= 23,976 lbs
Soil bearing pressure = 23,975 = 666 psf < 1,000, okay
4 x 9
The existance of reinforcing in the existing footing has not been
determined. Except for minor hair -line cracking, there are no significant
cracks in the foundation area that indicates the footing would be unstable
to support the re -built fireplace.
SPECIFICATIONS
FOR EPDXY INSTALLATION OF BOLTS & RE -BAR IN
CONCRETE OR MASONRY:
1. ALL EPDXY INSTALLATION SHALL BE DONE' IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE MANUFACTURER'S
INSTRUCTIONS.
2. HOLES MUST DRILLED TO EXACT SIZE RECOMMENDED BY MANUFACTURER.
3. HOLES MUST BE CLEANED AND DRY IN ACCORDANCE WITH MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS. SEE
NOTES 6, 7 AND 8.
4. BOLTS SHALL BE ALL THREAD, CAD PLATED OR -GALVANIZED. RE -BAR SHALL BE DEFORMED.
5. THE FOLLOWING EPDXY SYSTEMS MAY BE USED:,
EPCON SYSTEM - I.C.B.O. ES, LISTING — REPORT #4285:
SIMPSON SET - I.C.B.O. SET, CODE LISTING - REPORT #5279:
HILTI HIT C-100 SYSTEM - I.C.B.O. REPORT 4016:
6. DEPUTY INSPECTION SHALL BE REQUIRED ON ALL'INSTALLATION OF BOLTS AND RE -BAR INTO
CONCRETE OR MASONRY.
7. PRIOR TO INSTALLATION OF THE EPDXY, THE WORKER SHALL HAVE THE FOLLOWING EQUIPMENT
AND MATERIAL ON SITE AND READY FOR INSTALLATION PROCESS:
a. HIGH PRESSURE AIR SOURCE AND AN AIR NOZZLE WITH AN EXTENSION THAT IS CAPABLE
OF EXTENDING TO THE BOTTOM OF THE HOLE.
b. A STIFF BRUSH, SLIGHTLY LARGER THAN THE DRILLED HOLE WITH A HANDLE LONG
ENOUGH TO EXTEND THE BRUSH TO THE BOTTOM OF THE HOLE.
C. A SUFFICIENT SUPPLY AMOUNT OF EPDXY TO COMPLETE THE JOB. MATERIAL SHALL HAVE
BEEN STORED AT ROOM TEMPERATURE FOR 24 HOURS BEFORE APPLICATION.
SHEET 3
8. THE FOLLOWING INSTALLATION PROCEDURE SHALL BE DONE IN THE PRESENCE OF THE DEPUTY
INSPECTOR:
a. CHECK HOLE TO BE DRY AND FREE OF MOISTURE.
b. MEASURE DEPTH OF HOLE FOR MINIMUM DEPTH REQUIREMENTS.
C. SCRUB HOLE WITH BRUSH IN A VERTICAL AND ROTATING MOTION TO DIS -LODGE ALL DUST
AND LOOSE MATERIAL. INSERT LONG NOZZLE TO BOTTOM OF HOLE AND PURGE HOLE WITH
HIGH PRESSURE AIR. REPEAT PROCEDURE UNTIL NO MORE LOOSE MATERIAL OR DUST IS
EJECTED FROM HOLE.
d. INJECT A SUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF EPDXY INTO HOLE WO THAT WHEN'BOLT OR RE -BAR IS
INSERTED, AT LEAST A SMALL_AMOUNT OF:EPDXY WILL EXTRUDE OUT OF THE HOLE,
INDICATING THE BAR OR BOLT IS COMPLETELY ENCASED IN EPDXY.
e. INSERT THE RE -BAR OR BOLT IN A ROTATING MOTION, TO THE REQUIRED DEPTH.
9. BOLTS SHALL NOT BE TIGHTENED OR RE -BAR PLACED UNDER STRESS UNTIL AFTER MINIMUM CURE
TIME HAS ELAPSED AS RECOMMENDED BY THE EPDXY MANUFACTURER.
10. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE HOLES BE DRILLED THE SAME DAY THAT THE EPDXY IS INSTALLED
TO AVOID EXPOSURE TO MOISTURE. IF HOLES ARE EXPOSED TO MOISTURE, SPECIAL DRYING
PROCEDURES SHALL BE IMPLEMENTED UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE ENGINEER.
A MINIMUM OF 2" CLEARANCE
