In particular, a beam was observed to be of substandard quality and in fact had begun to fail and develop a deep split around a knot in the extreme tension fibers. This situation was also noted by the city's building inspector who in turn directed Choice Enterprises to have my firm recommend remedial measures to correct the problem. At my direction therefore, Choice .Enterprises directed the framing contractor to provide the following: ❑ Brace up the center of the span to take out all deflection ❑ Apply construction mastic to the full depth of the split ❑ Apply 15/32" structural wood paneling'to both sides of the beam ❑ Provide 5/8" carriage bolting at 12" o/c top and bottom through the paneling and beam for a minimum of 3'-0" either side of the split ' Upon my observation visit this morning the above described measures have been executed and the re- sulting assembly conforms to my specified directions to my satisfaction. The remainder of the structure has been observed to be in substantial conformance with the structural design intent *of the structural construction documents prepared under my direction previous field direc- tions.
