APPMIN 07 11 1994ART IN PUBLIC PLACES MEETING MINUTES LA QUINTA CITY HALL -NORTH CONFERENCE ROOM July 11, 1994 The regular meeting of the La Quinta Art in Public Places Committee (APP) was called to order at 3:08 P.M. by Chairman Walling. ROLL CALL: Committee' Members Nancy Nard, Kathleen Smith-Schooley, Kathryn Hull, Carolyn Lair and Chair John Walling. STAFF PRESENT: Planning Director Jerry Herman and Department Secretary Betty Sawyer. Committee Members Hull/Nard moved to excuse Committee Members Lia Gilbert and Kay Wolff. The motion carried unanimously. I. CONSENT CALENDAR: A. Committee Members Hull/Lair moved to approve the Minutes of June 13, 1994, as submitted. Unanimously approved. II. ELECTION OF CHAIR AND VICE CHAIR: A. Chairman Walling requested that elections be held at the next regular meeting in September when all members were present. Unanimously approved. III. BUSIlVESS ITEMS: A. Discussion of the La Ouinta Arts Foundation Proposal to City Council: Committee Member Lair reported that as of this date, the Foundation had not heard from the City Council regarding the "Youth Art Works Public Art Project" that was submitted for their review and approval. 1. Members discussed locations where art was needed to be incorporated into the area. It was felt the "Mini-Park" at Avenida Colima and Eisenhower Drive would be a good starting point. Discussion followed regarding using shade figures to create interest and possibly be utilized) in future shade parks. 2. Committee Member Lair went on to explain some of the projects that were planned and the artists they were speaking with to lead the projects. 3. Following discussion, staff was instructed to send a recommendation to the City Council in September that the "Mini-Park" at Avenida Colima and Eisenhower Drive be selected as the first site for the art work. APP7-11 1 Art in Public Placed Minutes July 11, 1994 B. La Quinta Arts Foundation Proposal for a Cultural Center: Committee Member Lair explained the proposal to the Committee. The site tentatively being looked at was at the corner of Avenida Bermudas, Avenida Navarro, and Avenida Montezuma. Members discussed alternate sites that were being lool~:ed at and possible uses for the Center. C. Continued work on the Master Art Plan: Chairman Walling asked tltat this be continued to September 12th, when all members would be present. 1. Committee Member Lair stated she would complete the section on Public Contact and Involvement for that meeting. 2. There being no further discussion, the matter was continued to September 12, 1994. IV. ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business, it was rnoved and seconded by Committee Members Nard/Lair to adjourn to a regular meeting of the Art in Public Places Committee on September 12, 1994, at 3:00 P.M. in the North Conference Room. This meeting of the Art in Public Places Committee was adjourned at 4:25 P.M., July 11, 1994. APP7-11 2
