NER-170 Reissued August 1, 1990 This report is subject to re-examination in 2 years. RMAX, INCORPORATED 13524 WELCH ROAD DALLAS, TEXAS 75244-5291 SUBJECT Rmax TSX100 and TSX2000 Insulation Boards II. PROPERTY FOR WIIICII EVALUATION IS SOUGHT 1. Surface Burning Characteristics 2. Thermal Performance III. DESCRIPTION Rmax TSX Insulation Board is single -ply aluminum foil, a 3 -ply composite skin or a glass mat laminate -faced polyisocyanurate foam panel. Thicknesses range from 12 inch to 3-3/4 inches for standard 48 inch widths and various lengths. The fsocyanuratc formulation used by Rmax has an approximate density of 2.0 pcf and maximum flamespread and smoke developed ratings as noted in Table I. The single -ply aluminum foil facing consists of either a 1 mil thick plain smooth reflective foil, 1 mil thick white pigment-coatcd foil, or 1-1/4 mil thick embossed white pigment -coated foil. The 3 -ply composite skin consists of 3 mil thick aluminum foil/60 pound per 3000 square foot ream material kraft paper/3 mil thick aluminum foil. The glass mat laminate consists of an aluminum foil adhered to an approximately 10 mil thick lightweight glass mat. The unprinted or foil surface of the insulation board must be installed toward the exposed or room side of the construction. The side containing the identification information must be installed toward the outside of the building or structure. A thermal barrier protection is not required when the Rmax TSX Insulation Boards are installed in accordance with this report. IV. INSTALLATION The Rmax TSX Insulation Board may be installed in areas where combustible materials are permitted. The insulation board may be installed on the inside face of wood or steel framing and. secured at each supporting element with suitable fasteners such as galvanized roofing nails with a 3/8 inch head, 1/4 inch stove bolts with 1-1/2 inch steel washers or self -tapping screws spaced 12 inches on center across the board width. The board must be continuous over at least three framing members and have a minimum of two full spans. It may also be sandwiched between structural purlins or girts and metal skins or installed as a nonstructural sheathing on frame construction. Attic spaces created by these materials must be vented to the outside for pressure -relief purposes related to temperature variations. The insulation board may be covered with combustible material to provide protection from damage, provided the covering material meets the interior finish requirements of the code. Interior joints of the insulation board may be treated with aluminized -sensitive tape. Tape must be applied. to a clean dry surface free from dirt, grease, moisture, or frost. The tape shall not be stored or applied at a temperature below 40' F. The insulation board may be installed within or against the interior side of the exterior facing of noncombustible exterior nonbearing walls not required to be of fire -resistive construction -without affecting the noncombustibility rating. Installation on interior wall or ceiling surfaces of noncombustible construction is permitted as set forth in Sections 2002.0 and 923.2 of the BOCA National Building Code, Sections 704.8.1, 704.8.2 and 704.83 of the Standard Building Code, and Section 4203(1) and (2) of the Uniform Building Code. This is contingent on the boards' not being used for structural purposes. o Interior exposed conditions for combustible construction are permitted under the same conditions as noted for noncombustible construction. Exterior siding of wood, metal, or plastic may be applied over the insulation board in accordance with the siding manufacturer's REPORT NO. NER-170 PAGE 1 OF 2 This report is limited to the specific product and data and test reports submitted by the applicant in its application requesting this report. No independent tests were performed by the National Evaluation Service Committee, and the committee specificady does not make any warranty, either expressed or implied, as to any finding or other matter in this report or as to any product covered by this report. NER-170 instructions for mechanical connections, provided the minimum specified penetrations into framing members or backing are maintained and the maximum thickness of the insulation is limited to 2 inches. The insulation board is considered to act as a vapor barrier. If a stud cavity is. created, in order to avoid trapped, concealed moisture problems, the building official may require that a vapor barrier be installed on the inside or warm surface of the stud cavity.
