NOTE: Maintain a 1" clearance around the throat (projection at the front of the fireplace that holds the glass door) when installing 2x4s
for back framing.
Step 1). Cut and install one 2x4 to fit horizontally under the fireplace throat. µ
Step 2). Cut and install required quantity of short filler 2x4's to fit vertically under the horizontal piece. .r
Step 3). Cut and install four vertical 2x4's. Place 2 on each side of the fireplace throat.
Step 4). Join the two steel header pieces to get the required length, see chart below for steel header measurements.
Step 6). Install supplied steel header 1" above the throat. Attach steel header to vertical 2x4's as shown in figure 6.

The following addresses the structural related comments from the building department, and
redlines. The list is numbered to correspond to the list from the building department.
Additional Comments Section
1. Post and header sizes were already on the plans, and are in the notes at each item, which also
describe what's being done at the particular location.
2. Wall elevation provided for master bedroom wall. The revisions to me seem better than
what's out there. All they wanted to do was center the fireplace in the room. The existing
beam appears to be a drag beam for the hardi panel to the right. Regarding the 9k load, its
the load on the beam as if there was no support. Just wanted to make sure the fireplace
header worked and wasn't interested in analyzing the configuration to get an exact number.
In actuality the beam probably imposes no load on the fireplace header.
3. Reinforcing was added at the new pad footings.
Regarding the slab reinforcing, Sladden did not provide any tension, compression or shear
forces to design the slab to as far as I can tell, as this is considered as a non-structural
residential slab, so what would the purpose of providing a report for the epoxy do as there is
not criteria to compare it to or design to. No criteria to say it has to meet. And you can't
drill into the edge of a 4" slab and meet any code design criteria anyway. So what to do
here? Weld the wire fabric or rebar back together? Use reinf. wire connectors or rebar
connectors? I've never seen that on residential non-structural slabs and seems like it would
be a hassle for the contractor to run all that down, and for me to find everything as well.. An
interesting problem here. And I don't want them to dig out the slab to a lap -splice length
that meets the code either as that's not a good idea. I think it's easier to just dig thru the
existing reinf. and leave it intact. So that's what I spec'd on the plans.
4. Provided perforated design for existing configuration to show max. forces the existing wall .
can hold per code, and then used those forces to design a conventional shear wall in the area
where the window was filled in.
