Per our conversation today, I �am faxing this s correspondence to your fax today.
I am concerned about the 6x header and beam material being used in the Wilson
house. I observed said material at job site containing substantial horizontal cracking
down the center. Said material contains the heart of the tree at the center of the beam.
This condition is in direct conflict with my Framing Plan Notes on the Architectural
Plans, sheet a5. At the Framing Plan Notes, under the "Lumber Grade" section, the
second sentence states "All members shall be free of the heart of the tree".
I have requested from the framer and contractor that all of said material be removed
from the structure and that the remaining material on th job site not be used in the
construction of this structure. l' observed a portion of said material being used at the
rear patio next to the family room. Said header. is marked as H4 on the Framing Plan,
sheet a5.
I feel that if this material is used in this structure, there will be a substantial chance that
the structure will in the future sustain some sort of structural failure.

inspection approval upon the removal of said material from the structure.

<:. I have been contacted by the project's general contractor, Jack Clark Construction, to review and
'approve some revisions to the structural detailingAue to field conditions.that have arisen during
construction. Specifically, there were some holdowns missed and the contractor wanted to have
alternates specified: 1Upon review of the plans'and•calculations for the project I find that using: -
ti ti 4v>' Simpson Strong -tie's MTT28B's along with an RFB5x16 bolt-will'be adequate Wall instances:.,ln
addition, there. were some anchor bolts missed or misplaced and I have directed the contractor to .
use Hilti Kwik Bolt II'stud anchors or other similar, products of equal diameter to replace the _
missed anchor bolts. Finally, the contractor's framing contractor directed me to a situation where
a post base was misplaced.- In this case the post was to be installed Just outside of the base

already cast into the concrete .and therefore I directed him to use the leg of the base closest to '
• ` ' ` "`'`` post to attach to with' machine bolts and large cut washers against the wood on the side away

from the post base leg. In reviewing my calculations I find that the post is not intended to resist":'
uplift and so this solution is acceptable.

conforming structural timbers. intended for use as either beams or headers. He directed .his -r '

,architectural drawing, package by Mr. King and meet any. structural plan check requirements. In
this capacity I should, have seen the,note and, as I said previously,had it eliminated.

In this day and age of "farmed", fast growth timber it is practically impossible to get, large
pieces of lumber free of heart wood and I believe the UBC standards for wood eidlummber
structural values in general have been revised to reflect this. Also Mr. King objected to what
he felt was an unacceptable amount of checks and splits in the header and beam lumber. I
visited the site, observed the lumber in question, found the lumber to be at least No. 1 douglas
fir (many grade stamps were in evidence including some select structural), reviewed the UBC
standards for No. 1 douglas fir and found the lumber to be well within the standards for No. 1
douglas fir as specified on the drawings and in the calculations. Ultimately, the acceptance for
the lumber falls to my responsibility, not to Mr. King and I can only say in conclusion that I do
find the lumber acceptable and in conformance with the structural design intent and the
standards of the Uniform Building Code.

I have been supplied` with a copy of the truss manufacturer's calculations prepared by
Trussworks of Thousand Palms, .CA for the project noted above. Upon review of these
calculations I find them to be in substantial • conformance with the design intent of the
construction documents. Trussworks and I agree that a thorough site verificationr will be
undertaken prior to truss fabrication.
