SO/aPLSEnterprises 1590 South Sinclair Street, Anaheim, California 92806 • (714) 978-1122 Solar Absorber Plate The Phelps Dodge all -copper solar absorber plate is effective and economical for use in solar collectors for water heating, space heating and swimming pools. The plates are light in weight, easy to handle, yet use an adequate thickness of copper for effective heat transfer. The riser tubes, provide good flow characteristics, 150 psig operating pressure, resistance to blockage, and high surface area for good heat transfer. The fins are wrapped 3600 around the riser tubes and permanently secured with continuous roll -formed lock seams that maintain an all copper thermal path for high efficiency. Headers are provided in a variety of optional sizes. The plates are available in standard and custom sizes and with or without high absorptance coating. The Phelps Dodge Five Year Limited Warranty is based on compliance with a factory supplied instruction sheet. Specifications Riser Tubes: Copper, alloy 122, 3/8" nom. = 1/2" o. d., hard drawn, .017" wall spaced 5.644" center -to - center. Absorber Fin: Copper, ETP alloy 110,.008" thickness, 3/a" hard Headers: Cropper, alloy 122, T -Drill joints Coatings: Selective options: 1. Conventional electrode - posited black chrome, on nickel Non-selective options: 1. Alkyd Base Paint 2. Polyester Base Paint 3. Silicone Paint All paints are applied after appropriate pre- treatment and are bake cured and dried to prevent outgassing and enhance durability. Applied according to manufacturers specifications. Plates are available with no coating. Construction: Risers are joined to headers through a T -drilled collar and silver brazed with BCuP-3 alloy. The absorber fins are roll -formed sections, contin- uously lock -seamed 360° around the riser tubes and mechanically interlocked along the midline between riser tubes (see drawing). Factory processed spun closures, hose clamp beads, flares and "sweat" fittings may be provided on the headers according to customer request. Application requirements and suggestions Aggressive water containing acidity may damage the absorber plate. Avoid acidic by- products of anti -freeze and other additives to closed-loop system fluid. For non -aqueous heat transfer .fluids, follow manufacturers recom- mendations for use with copper absorber plates. Our technical representative may also be able to help you. Thermal Expansion Allow about 3/8" maximum expansion for each 8' of absorber length over the ranges of temperature to which it is exposed. The co -efficient of thermal expansion is 9.5 x 10-6/DF or 17.1 x 10-6%°C. Otherwise, stresses may result in damage to plate or its enclosure. Solder for connections should be 95/5 or capable of withstanding stagnation temperatures and pressures. Lightning protection can be aided by adhering to standard practices for reducing the likelihood of a lightning strike. This may require connecting the plate and the collector frames to a grounded lightning arrestor with a heavy wire. Wind forces can be considerable on an exposed, unsecured absorber and its collector. The plate and its enclosure should be secured well enough to withstand winds of up to 120 mph. WATER TREATMENT FOR SOLAR POOL HEATING In solar pool heating applications, the pH of the pool water should be kept greater than 7.0. In addition, concentrated chlorinating compounds should not be introduced to the pool through the solar heating system (ie. add chlorine directly into the pool after water has passed through the solar system). A chlorine level of less than 2 ppm and a pH of 7.7 are good practice for swimming comfort. I Solar Absorber Life Cycle Testing An active solar energy system should be reliable over an extended period of years to achieve an adequate economic return on its original cost. During its economically useful life the absorber plate within a solar system is exposed to a wide range of temperatures from below freezing to no -flow stagnation temperatures of 400DF or more. Moreover the plate can experience very rapid temperature changes when cold water is suddenly pumped through a stagnating collector. The stresses produced can be destructive to the plate, its supports, and other components within the collector, if it is not designed to withstand repeated heating and cooling. Phelps Dodge has pioneered in the devel- opment of an all copper absorber plate which can withstand repeated thermal cycling between stagnation and room temperature. To simulate these conditions, Phelps Dodge constructed a life cycle test facility. Using radiant heaters an absorber is heated until the surface temperature is 450°F ± 50°, then cold water (58DF) is pumped through the unit at 9, ± 1, gallons per minute cooling the absorber to less than 65°17. A single heating and cooling is considered one cycle. The qualification program used to test absorbers involves mounting a coated absorber in a collector and measuring the absorptivity, emissivity and instantaneous efficiency in an .20 N i rn M .10 5 .08 Q 0 Lu .06 U) W .04 ac a a .03 a .02 SORBER PLATE: 17.236 Fr.2 2 3 4 5 6 8 10 15 20 30 40 FLOW RATE IN LBS./HR.-FT.2 @ 770 The Phelps Dodge Solar Absorber Plate offers a low pressure drop for the flow rates that are typically used. Thus, it can be used in both thermosyphon and forced circulation solar systems. outdoor exposure test accordingL to ASHRAE 93-77. When efficiency data has been recorded the collector is returned to the laboratory, the cover material removed, the collector box is placed on the life cycle test rack and subjected to continuous thermal cycling. The test is interrupted at the 10, 100 and 1,000 cycle marks; thermal performance and optical prop- erties are measured. The test is continued and certified as valid only after 10,000 thermal shock cycles have been completed. This is the equivalent of a stagnation followed by a cold water purge every day for over 25 years. After completing the life cycle test program, the absorber plate is evaluated by comparing instantaneous efficiencies and fluid parameter data collected according to ASHRAE 93-77 during the outdoor exposure tests. Typical results indicate that the efficiency after 10,000 cycles has increased a few percent. This is not an experimental error since the same trend has been observed on other test units. At the completion of the life cycle test program no mechanical damage was observed when the absorber was inspected. The absorber maintained specified pressurization and there was no loss in the integrity of the mechanical bond between the water tube and the fins or between the fins themselves. Therefore, it is anticipated that the Phelps Dodge absorber design will not fail, during the * expected life of the unit, due to any mechanical problems associated with then -nal cycling. The Phelps Dodge absorber has passed the strictest of performance testing programs. 100 INSTANTANEOUS EFFICIENCY GRAPH 90 LEGEND: O FIELD DATA - ANALYSIS 80 oma' 70 U 60 W APERTURE AREA NET V so GROSS COLLECTOR AREA W40 30 20 10 0.05 0.10 0.15 0.2o 0.25 0.30 0.35 0.40 0.45 0.50 0.55 Parameter T^ TO (F I? hr/Btu) This independent test data for the Phelps Dodge Absorber Plate with blackchrome coating was prepared by Solar Energy Analysis Laboratory. J • l y TWO SERIES: AVAILABLE IN 66, 80, AND 120 GALLON MODELS Rheem Solaraide Storage Tank and Electric Storage Water Heater ... especially designed to be completely compatible with direct solar heating systems. Specify Rheem Electric Solaraide for solar -heated water storage. Why Solaraide? Several good reasons. First, Rheem offers R -Foam'" Insulation, a rigid, polyurethane foam compound for superior insulating qualities to. keep heat in the tank where it belongs. Solaraide products equipped with R -Foam" even exceed the R-12 requirement in states like California. Second, Rheem gives you a choice. (1) a storage tank specially equipped for installation with a Solar System. (2) or an electric storage water heater with a single element that "aides" the sun to provide sufficient hot water. The element assists the system only when the solar energy ' cannot maintain the desired temperature or during periods of peak demand for hot water. Both the single element electric and storage model series feature a raised solar panel outlet that helps prevent scale and sediment from entering and circulating through the solar collector cells. And finally, Rheem Solaraide is available in three capacities -66, 80 and 120 gallon models—sized for the average -to -large family. Raised 7" from the bottom, the outlet to the solar collector panels helps prevent scale and sediment from entering and circulating through the solar system. A special threaded stud is also welded to the tank near the outlet for attachment of tank sensors. R -FOAM'" RIGID POLYURETHANE FOAM... sr N -Foam'"—a new monocellular rigid polyurethane foam insulation formulated to provide the lowest thermal conductivity of any insulation currently practical for water heater construction. This process forms a compact bubble pattern' around the tank. The uniform application minimizes the possibility of costly heat loss caused by numerous uninsulated areas discovered in earlier foam processes.
