For your protection you should be aware that as "Owner/ Builder" you are the responsible pa~ty of record on such a permit. Building permits are not required to be signed by property owners unless they are personally performing their own work. If your work is being performed by someone other than yourself, you may protect yourself from possible liability if that person applies for the proper permit in his or her name. Contractors are required by law to be licensed and bonded by the State of California and to 1 -.ave a business license from the City or County. They are also required by law to put their license number on all permits for which they apply. If you plan to do your own work, with the exception of various trades that you plan to subcontract, you should be aware of the following information for your benefit and protection: If you employ or otherwise engage any persons other than your immediate family, and the woik (including materials and other costs) is $200.00 or more for the entire project, and such persons are not liceised as contractors or subcontractors, then you may be an employer. If you are an employer, you must register with the State and Federal Government as an employer and you are subject to several obligations including State and Federal income tax withholding, federal social security taxes, worker's compensation insurance, disability insurance costs and unemployment compensation contributions. There may be financial risks for you if you do not carry out these obligations, and these risks are -especially serious with respect to worker's compensation insurance. For more specific information about your obligations under Federal Law, contact the Internal Revenue Service (and, if you wish, the U.S. Small Business Adminstration). For more specific information about your o1bligations under State Law, contact the Department of Benefit Payments and the Division of Industrial Accidents. t. I From: R.M. Dennis, General Contractor To: David Saftonstall City of La Quinta Planning Department Building Department RE: 42490 Via Pompa, Patio Cover David & Eva Saltonstall To Whom it May Concern: Date: 4/28/98 Time: 12:05:16 PM David Saltonstall 42490 Via Pompa La Quinta, CA 92253 April 28, 1998 We are submitting plans for a patio C19>4at our residence in Parc La Quinta. We have discovered, however, that a zonin rdmance prohibits our special design.' This -letter is an appeal to approve this design. The zoning rule specifically prohibits patio covers with rafter beam spacing of Wore than 32" o.c. or shading wood of less than 2"x2" cross section. . This rule is presumably trying to keep weak and chintzy covers from propagating in the city. We, too, have no interest in building a weak or chintzy addition to our home. Our proposed design has rafter beam spacing of 60" with horizontal shading wood of 2"x4" dimensions. It is a high quality design with high quality strength and appearance. Please see attached photocopy from magazine. Page 1 of 1 Starting at the top, the 2x4 #2 DF resawn stock will span the 60". Underneath tdiat, the 2x8 #1 DF doubled beams on 60"o.c. span the 12' well within the UBC and La Quinta City guidelines. At the 14'6" span we've bolted the #1 DF 3x8s through the 4x4's to =e0- join the wood into a beam much larger than a solid 6x8. ;'This design yields a s-rength/__ which exceeds UBC span calculations in. all dimensions. There. will. be no twist-ng;or sagging of beams in the future._"w N15 / GvC `0 N This patio cover will be a beautiful addition to our home, and it is designed to look just as Vglkl good ten years from now.'' We ask that you waive the 32" rafter spacing requirement in this casG 's' t✓. A,NIAI P ti /--v A#M ve - WAJ 5 David Saltonstall 773- 40 ,Z2 x_567 yx4 4.2 OF L.,z I, , °Sb e 2ya04, N N DAF 0 z w z o • a UC..45 o 1 OF 4C;Z$- F6 R" "" .
