Observation of the construction of this project was conducted or supervised by • Brian Gottlieb of this office. These observations were to establish the conformance of several items including, but not limited to: conformance of framing to framing plans, roof sheathing, drag straps and detailed connections. Corrections were provided after each observation- to communicate the items of concern to the builder. Subsequent re -checks of the structure for compliance were performed until all outstanding correction items were resolved. In conclusion it is the opinion of this office that the construction of this project is in general conformance with the requirements of the structural drawings. The conclusions reached above are based solely on a visual review of the structure. Due to the visual nature of these observations, and limited access to structural elements, a general review of the structural elements and connections has been performed. No tests have been conducted on any materials or soils and no warranties are expressed or implied. The opinion above is based upon widely held engineering principles and judgment, and it follows a standard of care which. defines a level of skill and competence ordinarily and contemporaneously demonstrated by professionals of the same discipline practicing in the same locale and faced with the same or similar facts and circumstances. 0 Casey Residence — La Quinta, CA. The jumping jack and vibrating roller should not be used for compacting paving stones, just for the foundation. 0 0 0 C 0 0 0 11 0 0 Paving stone installation 1- Excavation 1.1 If conduit or wires are located in the area to be excavated, contact the representatives of the company concerned before the work is started. 1.2 To ensure sufficient drainage, excavate the soil to obtain a minimum incline of 2% (1/4 inch per foot). 1.3 The excavation contour should extend beyond the surface to be paved by at least 12". Ideally, this distance should be 1 to 1 1/2 times the thickness of the foundation. The stability of the project depends on this measurement, which ensures that the paving stones at the edge will be as well supported as those in the center. 1.4 Level the bottom of the excavation with a rake and, if the soil is sandy, compact it with a vibrating plate or roller. it is preferable not 10 pack clay soil at this stage. In this case, the use of ayeotextile membrane placed between the natural soil and the foundation is recommended to prevent foundation contamination by clay and ensure greater stability. Refer to the chart to get the minimum excavation required (Ref: photo #1) 2- Foundation Spread and compact the 0-3/4" stone in 4" layers. Lightly water the 0-3/4" stone to make tamping easier. To ensure an adequate foundation, compact the stone several times with a vibrating plate or roller, or a jumping jack. (Ref: Photo #2) Once this stage is completed, you will be able to see what the final result will look like. You can verify the final level of the pavers by placing a paver on a guide. (Ref: Photo #3) Refer to typical installation drawings (see page 49). 3- Installation bed 3.1 Spread between 5/8" and 1" of concrete sand or (Ref: Photo #4) screening. Bear in mind that a I " bed will be reduced down to 5/8" in thickness once compacting is completed after the paving stones are installed. 3.2 Level the concrete sand using two (2) 1" diameter pipes and a straight plank (Ref: Photo #5). Any significant variation in bed thickness may cause irregularities in the paved surface:' 3.3 Take care not to compact the screenings or the sand before laying the pavers on the installation bed. NATURE OF PROJEI Nature of soil Minimum excavation required Minimum foundation thickness (0-3/4" crushed stone) Minimum/maximum uncompacted installation"' bed Thickness of the paving stone Photo #1 Photo #2 PATIO OR SIDEWALK The inlormation in Ilus table shows the minimum required la a job well done. Anything above fids level signals improved stability of the whole. Photo #3 " Once compacted, a 1" bed will be reduced down to 518". w Fof certain areas where clay soil is unstable, the minimum oxcavalion required Is 24" and the minimum foundation is 21". • • Ci • • • 0 0 4- laying the Paving Stones 4.1 Arrange the paving stones according to the pattern chosen with a 90o angle if possible. Proceed by walking on the paving stones (Ref: Photo 416). Fill the (roles left by the pipes. 4.2 Paving stones are manufactured with side spacers that will set a space of 1/8" between each paver. A space of 3/32" must be allowed for paving stones without spacers. 4.3 To obtain an even distribution of color and texture, it is recommended that you choose paving stones from more than one cube at a time. Moreover, working across each cube always gives the best results. 4.4 Check the alignment of file pavers after every five rows installed and adjust them, if necessary, using a screwdrivef. 4.5 Install paving stones up to the last row. To avoid having to cut paving stones later, determine the position of the curbs to finish with a complete paving stone. 4.6 If necessary, you can cut the paving stones using a chisel or specialized tools such as guillotine or a concrete saw (Rei: Photo #7). It is recommended that you use a chalk line to mark the paving stones to be cut. If you have to use a guillotine to cut the stones, be sure that the cut is at a slight angle as pavers cut this way are much easier to install. If you use a concrete saw, keep away from the paving stones already installed, since the dust and dirt from sawing will permanently stain them. Wear safety glasses when cutting concrete products. 4.7 On both sides of the paving surface, proceed with installing the Celtik Curbs. (Ref: Photo #8) 4.8 Once you have finished laying them, stabilize the pavers using a vibrating plate. (Ref: Photo #9) This operation will settle the stones into [lie bed while levelling the surface. For best results, run the plate over the pavers two or three times in both directions. The paving stones will settle into the screenings or the concrete sand by about 3/8,,. Paving Stone Installation Guide Ph.t. xa Photo #8 5- Filling the joints 5.1 Spread concrete sand over the paving stone, let dry, if necessary, then work it into the joints by brushing in all directions. (For improved performance, use Belgard's stabilizing sand.) (Ref: Photo #10). 5.2 Remove the excess sand and work the remainder in by passing the vibrating plate over it. Repeat steps 5.1 and 5.2 if necessary. 5.3 If, after a few days, some joints are not properly filled, repeat the procedure. 5.4 We suggest setting aside a number of paving stones for replacement.
