Heat Pump Water Heater
General Description
E•TechHeat PumpWaterHeaters saveenergy Compared
to conventional water heaters. The model R1061<2 extracts
low grade heat from the air, upgrades it, and then transfers it
to water. Air passing through the unit is cooled and
dehu6dified. Considerably more energy is transferred to the
water than is Used to operate the heat pump.
The unit contains a compressor, air -to -refrigerant
evaporatorcoil, airfan, water circulating pump, refrigerant -to-
water condenser coil, expansion device, and controls. Air is
forced over the evaporator coil by the fan, while water is
circulated from the water storage tank through the condenser
coil.
TheR106K2 islornewinstaltationsorretrufliapplications,
it installs easily upon a standard electric water heater (not
supplied) at the job site.

tested by utilitieS, government agencies, and 'independent
laboratories.
Installation & Operation
The R106K2 is supplied with installation hardware to
adapt to a standard electric water heater with a 19' minimum
diameter. The inlet to the R106K2 connects typically to the
tank's COLD water fitting: water heated by the R106K2 is
returned to the bottom of the tank through a supplied dip tube
Installed in the tank's HOT water outlet. The R106K2 may
iliiiiiwr' also be installed on most non-standard tanks with minor
plumbing modifications.
The unit must be protected from precipitation and air
temperatures above 110'F. Operation of the R1061<2 may
impact the heating and cooling requirements of a conditioned
space. The room surrounding the heat pump must contain at
least 1000 11,1 of free airspace for circulation; less space may
be required it air infiltration is permitted (e.g, if the enclosure
has fully louvered doors),
The R 106K2 connects electrically to 230/208 VAC single
phase power supply and an electric resistance water heater.
The existing electrical Circuit may be used for retrofit
installations. (The total load of the resistance heater must not
exceed 4500 watts.) A selector switch sets the operating
mode: heat pump, resistance elem@nts, or no heating.
If the room temperature falls to approximately 50°F, the
R1061<2 shuts ofi and energizes the tank element(s). If the
temperature of the water lines Inside of the R1 06K21 drops to
38°F, the circulating pump turns on and heated water in the
tank circulates through the system. The pump shuts oto when
the water temperature rises to 42°F. Thus, the R106K2 is
freeze protected as long as electric power is available and the
resistance heater is operational.
if the heat pump must be removed for service, the
resistance heater can be used for back-up healing without
disturbing the plumbing lines.
