Regarding: Truss Calculations for Building Horizons — Including Revised Calculations From AC Houston, Las Vegas
Dear Danny:
I received the revised truss calculations for the Building Horizons project. The trusses were found to be missing the calculations for
the drag truss at the rear of the garage, which were shown on the structural drawings. I have contacted AC Houston in Las Vegas and
they faxed me the revised calculations and promised to follow up with the hard copies. I have not received them as yet and have
included the faxed copies that I received to represent the changes in their package. .
I have reviewed the calculations for required drag truss connections and for compliance with local and code live and dead loads. The
truss calculations issued comply with the intention of the structural drawings for the Building Horizon project and appear to be in
compliance with the Uniform Building Code (1997) provisions for Live Loads based on various roof slopes. Appropriate
consideration has been given in the structural details to provide resistance wherever uplift may occur at the eave.
Therefore, please accept this letter as my acceptance of the truss package with the noted revisions as being in compliance with the
intentions of the structural drawings.

Regarding: Spates Revised Truss Calculations for Building Horizons — 52=870 and 52=890 Avenida Herrera G*�
Dear Mark:
I have reviewed the revised truss calculations for the Building Horizons. This letter confirms that the truss calculations are in full
compliance with the provisions of the structural engineering drawings for bottom chord bearing trusses. This letter also confirms that
the trusses are recognized as designed in compliance with the 1997 UBC provisions for a five load application as compliant with code
allowable roof slopes. The design dead loads are conservative compared to the design loads used on the structural analysis.
The trusses have been revised to eliminate any bearing on the interior partitions and to eliminate the need for a separately framed
ceiling in the hall and mechanical room. All interior foundations for these changes has been indicated as removed from the structural
plans.
The contractor is responsible for additional structural notes, which occur on the construction drawings, which may apply, to the
connection of these trusses to the structure below. All trusses will be continuously blocked at all bearing points. All blocking will be
full depth and shall fill the space between trusses, tightly from wall plates to finished roofing above. Full depth truss blocking may be
used in lieu of ripped 2x or 4x material. Plywood gussets shall also be allowed to connect flat 2x blocking at the plate and below the
roof diaphragm.
The contractor shall review and comply with all specifications on the Spates Truss package related to lateral bracing of the truss
members as required. Details and instructions for bottom chord bracing is provided in the Truss package.
Certain trusses have been designed to accommodate drag loads. Barr shall review the plans and apply the appropriate drag force
revision to these trusses prior to fabrication. All drag trusses will be located directly above shear walls as indicated on the plans.
Contractor shall install additional trusses as necessary to insure the proper location of the drag trusses as noted on the plans.

Please find attached three sets of signed drawings, two sets of structural analysis for each plan, revised truss calculations (facsimile
copies may be included if the final hard copies have not been received) and my letter of review and acceptance of the .truss design. As
we discussed, the residence uses a proprietary Shearwall system by Simplified Structural Systems (Hardy Frame"°, Hardy Paneln.
The ICBO report number and City of Los Angeles plan number is included in the drawings. The following responses are numbered to
coordinate with your correction sheets under the heading "Section H — Structural'.
I . The sheets are stamped and signed. The analysis was submitted with the original set, which you may have been rolled up in a set
given to another department. We received the calculations from you in our submittal package. Please look though the submittal to
locate the original analysis.
3. The Truss Calculations are included with my letter. The review of the truss calculation pointed out that the truss (A2) used at the
back wall of the garage was not designed to transfer shear (drag truss) as was indicated on the structural drawings. AC Houston
sent me revised calculations for the drag truss by facsimile and was to provide hard copies of the changes. The hard copies may
not have been received at the time we made this resubmitted and therefore have included the fax copies.
7. We discussed this issue and I have provided a simple note on the grade beam between garage piers to clarify the 12" x 12"
continuous grade beam that is to occur throughout the front.
10. The fireplace is a zero clearance firebox with a Metasbestos flue. Therefore, the chimney is simply a part of the roof framing —
wood stud and stucco. 1 will leave the corrections noted as part of the architectural sincethere is no mass to tie into the roof
framing.
13. As noted above, the calculation package was included in the original submittal. They are included in this resubmittal.
27. Please refer to sheet S20 — the schedule at the bottom of the sheet for the Hardy Frames. Each frame is referenced on the plans by
its nomenclature, which includes its type (i.e., H848, H818 etc). The indicated name is a code for the frames height and width that
can be found, with its capacity, on the schedule at the bottom of the sheet. The terminology H848 is used to order the braced
frame from the manufacture and represents the frame height (8) in feet and length in inch (48). The foundations are sized for the
maximum capacity of the frame rather than the actual shear demand of the structure, which is often, three or four times less.
Therefore, the frame represents the maximum capacity of the member in each case and is much greater than the shear it needs to
resist.
The only other issue remaining is the bearing wall foundation in all areas shown on the plans that support the weight of a separate
ceiling framing. I have been advised that the ceilings contain sheet metal ducts and will not be used as a plenum as originally thought.
However, the code is specific in regards to any wall which carry load. In this case the ceiling is required to carry a minimum live load
of 10-psf and its own weight. The code identifies the wall as bearing and requires the walls to be supported by an adequate foundation.
It is my professional opinion that I am bound to comply with the code measures and have decided to leave the foundations as shown
on the plans.
