The wood porches and the balconies of this building are required by the Building Code to be designed as I HR construction because these are considered part of the building. However, Fire Code section referenced above states that fire sprinklers are not required in entries and porches. Our request is for the Fire Department to allow the addition of Fire Sprinklers in lieu of the requirement for I HR construction of the porch and balcony. The principal of this request comes from the Building Cade allowing for the addition of Fire Sprinklers in lieu of I HR Construction. We are not asking for the building construction type to change but for the balcony and the porches to use the fire sprinklers in lieu of I HR Construction only. The alternative is to redesign the porch and the balconies with heavy timber to meet the I HR construction without the fire sprinklers. We have extensible evaluated the re -design of the parch and balcony with heavy timber, This redesign will drastically change the architecture already approved by the Planning Department, re -approval process will have to start again, and time is of the essence due to tax credit funding.
