Board and Fome-Cor Board Lathing Material. II. Description: A. Fame -Cor Board: Fome-Cor board consists of nomi- nal 1/4 -inch -thick extruded polystyrene foam with a 2.0 pound -per -cu- bic -foot density sandwiched between two layers of paper liner board. The 1/4 -inch bare foam plastic has a maximum flame -spread rating of 25 and maximum smoke -developed rating of 450. Fome-Cor is used as a non- structural sheathing, weather -resistive barrier or plaster backing material under exterior wall coverings. Fome-Cor can be installed as a siding un- derlayment over existing construction and as a structural or nonstructural weather -resistive sheathing for new construction. The exterior wall cover- ing or other wall elements must be adequate to resist wind loads. The board is manufactured in sizes up to 8 feet wide and 420 feet long that are scored and folded accordion style every 2 feet for shipment and handling purposes. Single sheets are also available at various dimensions. B. Fome-Cor Board Lathing Material: The product is similar to Fome-Cor board, manufactured in continuous lengths up to 52 feet long and 431/4 inches wide that are scored and folded accordion style every 2 feet. Single sheets, 49 inches wide by 96 inches long, are also available. The material complies as kraft waterproof building paper described in Section 1708 (a) of the code. Fome-Cor is classified Grades C and 0 building paper in accordance with Table No. 17-1-A of U.B.C. Standard No: 17-1. Flash- ing, when required, shall be in accordance with Section 1708 of the code. C. Installation: 1. General: As a siding underlayment for remodeling, Fome-Cor board is attached to the existing siding with enough fasteners, at approximately 24 inches on center, to hold it in place. New siding is in- stalled over the Fome-Cor in accordance with the code. As a nonstructural underlayment for new construction, Fome-Cor Board is applied over studs with enough fasteners, at approximately 24 inches on center, to hold it in place. New siding is attached over the Fome-Cor in accordance with the code. As a nonstructural lath exterior plaster backing, Fome-Cor board lathing material is applied with enough fasteners, at approximately 24 inches on center, to hold it in place. Exterior lath is then installed in ac- cordance with Section 4706 of the code. Fome-Cor is attached by staples, nails or screws to the wood or metal framing or existing construction. Corrosion -resistant staples for new con- struction have a 1 -inch crown and at least a 11/4 -inch leg to ensure 1 inch penetration. Staples are Senco P-15BAB, Duo -fast 1740 DLR, Bostitch BCS 1016 or equivalent. Corrosion -resistant roofing nails with at least a 3/8 -inch -diameter head and a length to ensure 1 -inch wood penetration may also be used. For exterior plaster application see Tables Nos. 47-B and 47-C of the code concerning types of fasteners, required spacing, and penetration. 2. Weather -resistive Barrier: Fome-Cor board or board lathing mate- rial is installed in accordance with Section 1708 (a) of the code. The prod- ucts may also be used on exterior walls as a plaster backing under Section 4706 (c) of the code. The board is equivalent to two layers of Grade D pa- per as required under Section 4706 (d) of the code. At the wall base, Fome-Cor must overlap the weep screed or extend at least 11/2 Inches over the foundation. Vertical edges must terminate over framing etlges and lap 6 inches. The upper course must overlap the lower course 3 Inches at horizontal edges. At all overlaps, the Fome-Cor can be compressed to provide a flat surface with reduced irregularities.. D. Shear Wall: For exterior plaster construction, a shear wall providing bracing required by Section 2517 (g) 3 of the code may be constructed using Fome-Cor board. Wall framing is minimum 2 by 4, Group III wood studs spaced 16 or 24 inches on center. Fome-Cor board is applied to framing with 3 -inch horizontal weather laps and 6 -inch vertical laps and spot fastened into place. The 11/2 -inch hexagonal opening No. 17 gauge woven -wire lath or gun lath (Evaluation Report No. 1254) is then applied over Fome-Cor board and fastened to all framing members at 6 inches on center with. No. 16 gauge corrosion -resistant staples having a 1 -inch crown. The staple legs must have a minimum 11/4 inch length and be long enough to penetrate framing at least 1 inch. The lath is overlapped 3 in- ches minimum. Lath overlaps must be offset from Fome-Cor overlaps. An ICBO ES recognized cementitious exterior wall coating is applied in accor- dance with the respective evaluation report. The base coat is 1/2 -inch -thick minimum and is cured in accordance with the evaluation re- port. A finish coat is 1/8 inch minimum and is applied after properly curing the base coat. The allowable racking shear is 170 plf. The height -to -width ratio shall be in accordance with Section 471'4-(dy'of the code. The acceptable cementitious exterior coatings are recognized in Evalua- tion Reports Nos. 3878, 3899, 4004, 4226, 4327, 4368, and 4441. E. One-hour Fire -resistive Assembly: 1. Interior Fane: One layer of 5/8 -inch -thick USG Firecode Type C gypsum wallboard (Evaluation Report No. 1602) is applied vertically to the interior face of 2 by 4 wood studs spaced 16 inches on center maximum. The wallboard is fastened with 6d cooler nails at all framing (8 inches on center on perimeter and 12 inches on center In field). All wallboard joints must be backed by minimum 2 by 4 wood framing and taped and treated with joint compound. Joint com- pound and tape must comply with ASTM C 475. Fastener heads must also be treated with joint compound. 2. Exterior Face: Minimum 35/8 -inch -thick unlaced rock wool blanket/ batt insulation, 2.5 -pound -per -cubic -foot density, is installed in the wall cavity. Fome-Cor board is randomly attached to the exterior side of the studs. The 11/2 inch by No. 17 gauge woven -wire lath or gun lath (Evalua- tion Report No. 1254) is attached with 1 -inch crown by 11/4 -inch leg No. 16 gauge corrosion -resistant staples at 6 inches on center on all perimeter and intermediate framing. The lath is overlapped 3 inches minimum. The cementitious exterior wall coating Is then applied in accordance with the evaluation report.
